Anyone have a good Slick experience to report?
I DON'T, but that may be due to my experiences with the early ones 4000
/6000 series. They were cheap and sold as a "no maintenance" part to be
thrown away at 800 hours, later on they offered a $15.00 trade-in on
them. They had problems!
Then the 4100 / 6100 series came out to correct some of the problems and
make them repairable. Some points and cam and a few other parts could
be had for repairs, along with a tool/fixture to set up internal timing.
Some people and Slick thought they were better. Running a repair shop
and maintaining a dozen 152's for a Cessna dealership--they still did
not impress me. Always kept a few in stock as spares, and used at least
1 a month just on the school planes.
A few years later the 4200 /6200 series came out. We did not use as
many.
Now the 4300 /6300 series are being used. I have no track record on
them.
When I do an annual inspection on a plane with any flavor of Slick
installed, I open them up and do a serious inspection, often changing
the points and cam check for "carbon tracks" in the distributor, arcing
and pitting on the rotor and mating towers of the distributor is cause
for me to reject components. Cross-firing at altitude still happens
often enough to concern me. I always do a high tension harness test
thru each lead to see if it will jump inside the magneto and arc at a
different lead.
My first choice for a new magneto is the Bendix 1200 (hi altitude)
series. I require the owner of TCM 520 /550 engine replacements to
order them with 1200's or I don't want to do the job and risk dealing
with Slick problems.
Half of the planes I do work on have the dual magneto (it's a Lycoming
thing you know)! The 3200 series has proven to be very reliable.
Even with the 500 hour impulse coupling inspection I feel they are more
reliable. I have had 1 instance ware a dual magneto casting broke at
the mount lugs and the magneto moved aft on the engine about 1/4", held
in place by the ignition harness. The fresh oil leak on the hangar gave
the owner cause to have it investigated.
So I have said My piece, you may want to argue with my judgment's but I
do get ignition reliability on the planes that I maintain. I am now
retired and can be very selective on what I choose to work on, and for
whom!
And I am willing to listen to anyone's discussion on this issue.

Subject: [rebel-builders] Slick mags
Are slick mags that bad? I hope not, because I just got 2 new ones on my
freshly overhauled O-320.
Anyone have a good Slick experience to report?
Thanks.
