[rebel-builders] windshield mounting

Post by Jim Cole » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:11 pm

Hi Mike, I took a picture for you - but like you I was going to make one and
then Bob mentioned something and yes there it was as part of the kit. I
can't remember the part number (it was 3 weeks ago) but take a look for a
piece 1 1/2 wide with a small bend on one side and about a 1/2 bend on the
other.
I'll forward the pix directly to you.
Cheers

Regarding the piece for the top of the windshield, I have one that I didn't
use because it doesn't work for the 1/4 inch windshield. You can have it if
you want it. Email me off list. I don't know about the side pieces. On my
Super Rebel the sides and bottom of the windshield are retained by a
fiberglass piece that is hand layed up in place.

At least a half inch which narrows as you move rearward. There is room
to run wire bundles over the top of the top carry through and back down
through the roof if that is what you are thinking.

Ron Shannon

[rebel-builders] windshield mounting

Post by Ron Shannon » Sun Feb 19, 2012 6:03 pm

There's supposed to be a gap there, so the windshield can clear the eyebrow
skylights, and doesn't chafe or bounce against the roof. You don't want to
force the windshield into a different shape than it naturally has anywhere
-- except perhaps to gently pull the side edges in against the fuse with the
side retainers a little -- because such stresses can get stronger with
thermal changes and in any case lead to premature failure. Just trim the
edges to fit. As the windshield "settles" into position over time and
thermal cycles in the shop, be prepared to trim more than once. The job
takes a lot of patience.

I just uploaded two pictures of the gap between the windshield and the
cockpit roof to the Rebel 206.
R-Fuselage<https://www.dcsol.com/code/html-list+fi ... oup=8>file
area on the builders web site. The photos show how most of the gap is
filled with black foam. Though not shown in these two photos, the remaining
small holes here and there are filled with RTV, which also helps to further
seal and anchor the foam.

I didn't intend to include that link. It arrived surreptitiously on its own
due to cutting and pasting the 206 area title line. However, I just went
back and checked the file area, and the pics do seem to be there. Be sure
you scroll through all the pics in that section. Oddly, it looks from here
as if the two new ones are appearing in the middle of the pack. Be sure to
refresh the page of file listings there if you've already got it open. They
may not have appeared yet when you first looked, etc.

If need be, you can also see the same pics on my own web site, at the bottom
of the article at http://n254mr.com/node/1301 -- a work in progress.
