[rebel-builders] Vans baffle kit

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm
by steve whitenect
Have been approached by a couple of friends to get their Rebel in the air
after their final inspection. Are the Vans baffle kits worth the cash and
are they a good tight fit? I have over heating issues with their assembly
and they also have one of the old high speed cowls with the smaller opening
at the bottom. I believe the top openings have been enlargened but the
outlet is quite small. The baffle is toast with alot of leakage and thought
I could save them some money with the kit rather than fabricating one from
scratch. Thanks for the replies

Hi Steve: In reviewing the Vans accessories, can you tell me which kit you
used, the BAF-4-320 or the BAF-6-320 for your Rebel. Van's sure has a great
selection of parts and seems to be reasonably priced also. Thanks. - Bob J

Hi Bob
I have always made my own with the rule of 2 square inches of leakage but
this takes time and now money for my people who want me to finish their
project. It works really good and haven't ever seen a cylinder temp above
320*F yet. Thought the kit would save them some money but I don't have any
experience with their the product.

Mike
Other than trimming the top and front, what other mods are there to do with
the kit? Just flattened my left thumb with a hammer and this is taking me
for ever with one hand and the other in ice water!

[rebel-builders] Vans baffle kit

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm
by Bob Patterson
Hi Steve !

Several builders have used the Van's baffle kits - they are very
nicely finished, and fit well. Need only a bit of trimming, and well
worth the money.

You are right that the bottom of the cowl should be lowered
to at least 2 or 3"+ below the bottom of the fuse, and extended
rearward at least a couple of inches, to get good extraction. Also
a good idea to add a piece of aluminum wrapped over the bottom
lip of the firewall to round it & smooth airflow....
(metal body filler tape will work if there's no room for sheet)

All Van's round the bottom lip - it gives them about 8 mph
increased cruise .... just helps cooling on the Rebel ...

[rebel-builders] Vans baffle kit

The cowl is finished unless I have to open up for better air flow if I get
high temps. I was mainly concerned about the tightness of the fit to the
engine itself and if there was any requirement to extend the back and sides
to meet the top cowl.

Thanks to all that replied

Hi Steve I used the van's kit when I changed engines and am very pleased
with it. It was more than big enough needing trimming all the way around. I
also had to cut and fit a bit on the rear baffles since I have a conical
mount instead of dynafocal. My temps have been good right from the start.

Hi Bob I ordered the BAF-6-320 at the online store without talking to
anyone so I don't know what the differences are or if the other one would
fit better. My thought was that an rv6 cowl looks more like a rebel than an
rv4 does.

Hi Steve I used the van's kit when I changed engines and am very pleased
with it. It was more than big enough needing trimming all the way around.
I
also had to cut and fit a bit on the rear baffles since I have a conical
mount instead of dynafocal. My temps have been good right from the start.

[rebel-builders] Vans baffle kit

Thanks for the reply Drew: (I was beginning to doubt if my request went
through) That is the info I was looking for. At least I now know that one
will work. Previous Rebels, the firewall forward kit was purchased from
Murphy, but I will not be doing that this time. I have sent several requests
to Murphy for information on other items and they where never even courteous
enough to reply. Except when I inquired about purchasing another Rebel kit -
I had a reply in less then 2 hours. The last Rebel I worked on, the owner
has been waiting over a year for all the parts for his firewall forward
kit.I guess a possible new customer is far more important then taking care
of existing. Sorry to sound off guys and if this sounds like Murphy bashing,
then I guess it is. Bob J Rebel 192/731

Hi Bob I ordered the BAF-6-320 at the online store without talking to
anyone so I don't know what the differences are or if the other one would
fit better. My thought was that an rv6 cowl looks more like a rebel than
an
rv4 does.
