Now I ask all you guys worried about your ears....do you wear hearing
protection in the work shop.?? You'll spend more time there building this
thing, than you will flying it in the next decade!

I recently researched the subject of ANR vs standard headsets, and there is
no doubt that the ANR versions are well worth the extra. Just an
additional
tidbit as food for thought.

Bose and David Clark both have relatively new models, The Bose "X" at
$995US
and the Clark "X-11" at about $799US. Both of these are outstanding units
with low weight and minimal "clamping force." (Otherwise knows as what
makes
your head feel as though it were in a vise after being worn for a while.)
Both
these units use a lot of electronic wizardry (and owner dollars) to
provide
the active noise reduction.

I found that David Clark also had the H10-13X model at just about $550US.
Lightspeed has the 30-3G model for a similar price. Although slightly
"older"
models, they utilize the passive technology a bit more (sealing noise out
vs
canceling it electronically.) As a result, if they stop "actively"
canceling
noise, maybe because I forgot to bring out a new 9 volt battery to the
airport
today, they still do a better job of sealing out the noise then the newer,
more expensive models.

So far I have logged several flights, the longest about 3 straight hours
with my new David Clark 10-13XL.

I couldn't be happier.

Just my $.02

As a matter of fact I do Wayne, I only got one set (ears), I don't loan them
out to much, and I take the best care of them I can. That's one thing I
haven't found a place to get a replacement set if something goes wrong. When
I worked construction the first thing I did in the morning was put my ear
protection on.. Just my opinion and thoughts but you are right! Dale

Me to Wayne: especially when I use my band saw or Dremel. My ears are
already bad and have been considering the Bose. I guess I better send the
wife out for a 2nd job. Bob J

Just making a point Bob, Dale...for those that don't wear protection in the
shop.

I'm bad for not doing so as much as I should....and the air drill is worse
for you than any noise while flying. My right ear is pretty much
toast..thanks to holding the drill in the right hand..and that ear is
closest to the drill. I'm always good for throwing a set on when using the
mitre saw or band saw...but when it comes to the air drill I have to
constantly remind myself to put a headset on.

Yup My employer is very generous with making sure I use hearing protection
on and off the job. I prefer the foam in the ear plugs they're very good
for attenuating sound plus they're light and not too hot. I usually carry
some in the plane as well cuz sometimes I like to turn off the radio and
just fly low and slow.

I've been stone deaf in my left ear since 10 years old. With only one
remaining, I have always used ear plugs religiously, and hearing in my
right ear has stayed as good as new.
Knock on surrounding tissue. ;)

Anything that's noisy, on goes the hearing protection. (Even when I'm
simply hand filing. For some reason that sound is like fingernails on a
blackboard to me.) Anything that could possibly throw bit's of metal or
whatever, on goes the eye protection (still 20-20 at age 46). Anything
smelly, on goes the pie hole filter. (OK, that's the one thing I skip
sometimes. Shouldn't, but do sometimes.)
