BOB P.
You mentioned something about tapered shims would like more info please. Also
tou're very right when you say 27 deg. up on the elevator, I was flying #460
with only 24 deg. and thought I was doing OK till I took you're advise and
added the three more deg. It makes for a much better flair on touch down
THANKS.

Phil,
Glad it helped !! We learned the hard way ..... hope these
tricks help others avoid problems.

The tapered shims are supplied with the new wheels, axles, and
brakes, as far as I know. I've heard comments from several builders
about using them. Presumably you can order a set from the factory, if you
didn't get them with your kit....

tapered shims

Hi There Folks

My friend damaged his Rebel as his up elevator was too low & his C of G too
far forward. I made sure that I did not have either of these problems. At
the expense of down elevator, I set up elevtor at 32 degrees. The only time
that I know that you would need full down elevator on the Rebel is during
ground handling in strong quartering tail wind. In flight, with a good C of
G location, the elevator response is very quick. I have found no need at
all for any where near full down elevator.

Bob

The shims did not come with the kit in my case, after I found out about
them, I called the factory & had them sent. No info in the manual about
them though surprisily, the spring gear in the manual is unusually long but
has several errors unfortunately. Have to be quite careful interpreting the
info.

The only other use of full down elevator (and you can definitely sacrifice 5
to 8 degrees of it, for UP elevator) is for ski flying. You do not need a
tail ski on the Rebel due to the lightness of the tail. Full sick forward to
lift the tail out of the snow and get moving. Then taxi along with the tail
in the air, with minimal forward to neutral stick. The other great benefit
of not running a tail ski is, that when you start to run out of runway you
can haul back on the stick forcing the tail wheel into the snow to use as a
brake. Yes you might break the tail spring (if you use those fiberglass
ones), but it is better than taking your wings off in the trees!!!!!
