[rebel-builders] Help with Moose prop

Post by Richard Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

I wonder if the prop is getting a sufficient supply of oil at the time
of this surge. Is their a restriction like too small of an oil supply
line, or the engine supply is to low of a flow to keep up with the
demand?

Hi guys !

Brent needs some help with the Corvette Moose,
getting the prop to work properly.

It's a 78" McCauley constant speed - and McCauley
just hang up as soon as they hear it's attached to a homebuilt !!
(Good reason to buy Hartzell or MT !!!!)

He'd like to talk to someone with a flat engine, with a
2 blade CS prop, to try to get some numbers. I've already
passed him Al Paxhia's address - anyone else ???

On takeoff, it will surge up to 5,000 rpm if the throttle
is opened quickly, but it will than drop to about 4,500 rpm,
and will not go higher - this is workable, but not ideal.
On cruise, we want to get about 3,600 rpm and 24 inches of MP,
but at 3,600, the most we can get is about 18-19" -- have to
go to 4,200 to get 25", but then oil temp rises rapidly to
unpleasant levels (260 !).

The governor has been back to the shop, where they
replaced the 'speeder spring' (???) - hasn't made much difference,
except when the oil is cold ... Prop hub now seems to be
weeping a thin film of oil .... This is a BRAND NEW PROP !!!!

Getting very frustrated - would love to try another prop &
governor..... or get some suggestions ! Anybody got an idea
what might be wrong ????

[rebel-builders] Help with Moose prop

Post by Rick Muller » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Along the same line of thinking as Dick, if the oil supply line has too many
bends this will restrict flow. Picture of setup might help us arm-chair
quarterbacks. I don't recall the builder's name. He is in Arizona, Phoenix
area. He has a firewall forward package from Vesta. Not sure what prop he
is using. If he doesn't respond to this email, I'll dig up his contact info
and see what he is up to.

[rebel-builders] Help with Moose prop

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Thanks Rick !

Unfortunately, be about 4 hours driving to get a picture -
but the lines are pretty straight, and all aluminum piping.
Good thought, though.

The prop & governor were checked over at a certified
shop, the spring was replaced, and everything set up
& tested - they said it would perform as spec'd, giving
4,700 engine rpm/ 2,350 prop rpm at takeoff power .....
BUT - they were basing that on a 300+ hp Lycoming,
running 100 weight oil --- this engine has 10-W-30 Synthetic,
running at about 230 - 240 degrees .... a LOT thinner !
We were wondering if that might be a factor -- or maybe
the gearing for the governor pump ...

Hard to know, when we can't get any pressure or
flow rates from McCauley .... :-(
Think that's why Brent is interested in talking to someone
with a flat engine and a 2 blade CS prop .....

My soob really likes 5W50 synthetic and the manual agrees for hard
working engines.
