[rebel-builders] Door Windows

Post by Robert Johnson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi Gary: The material I have for my Rebel is 3/32 which is the same as the
scraps left over from the Moose skylights. You should be able to get it from
any plastics supplier. Clear is never a problem, but the "smoked" has to be
bought in large quantity. Its to bad where so far apart as I have more
around here then I will probably ever use and would give you what you need.
The Rebel kit I am working on, being an older kit came with enough extra
material for the windshield but I bought a newer preformed one from Murphy.
Shipping would probably cost more the buying some locally. That is an option
if you have any trouble. Best regards. Bob J Rebel 192/731

The passenger side window of my plane has been damaged by dripping of
lacquer thinner on it. (I didn't do it for a change.) The manual simply
refers to it as lexan but does not specify thickness. So that I don't
have to take it apart to find out (and can leave it in service until
material is available), can someone please measure the thickness of the
window material and let me know?

Any suggestions as to where to buy such a piece in Canada would be
helpful too. Thanks.

there's also a phone number but I don't know how current it is -

Don't be so quick to make Dupont's Lexan generic for Polycarb. Lexan can be
bent in a brake..cut with tin snips. If you buy generic polycarb sheet and
try that...well lets just say don't!

thicker than what I have now in order to try and make the plane a little
quieter.

In the booklet "How to Soundproof Light Aircraft" available from

of the the best things you can do to reduce noise is use thicker window
material.

Should add they confirm thicker windows (and doors) attenuate not only
with engine noise, but also wind and prop generated noise, which are
major elements in most planes. The trade off is weight, of course.

There is an article in Kitplanes this month on a foam material
'polyvinyl nitride' which does a good job and complies with FAA
requirements on fire resistance. Does anyone know of a source in Canada?

My originals are only 1/16" thick and barely manage to hold snapvents
sort of.

YES!
C-Bailey Long Beach CA. offered a 1/4" windshield in place of a 3/16"
for a 172 and it was definitely quieter. Just a bit harder to install
if you didn't drill off the bottom retainer strip. So the same should
be true for noise on the side windows

Post by Eddie Moran » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Hey guys,

I have two smoked, bubbled side windows for sale. I bought the "Window Kit" from MAM and paid over $777 for the "set". I do not need the two side "main" windows. I just used the other ones.

The windows were made in 07 and I can send pics with measurements.

The windows do NOT have frames with them.

With the window kit costing $770 and consisting of eight windows............the two big side ones (that I am selling), the next three side windows (per side) that I used I would compute the value of the two smoked, bubbled, side windows as $400 for the two.

These windows would be very cool. I have clear bubble windows already and do not want to screw with them.
