HI - New member

Hi one and all. I just joined the maillist and thought I would drop a quick
line to introduce myself.

I'm in the gathering info mode and taking in all the good tips and other
wisdom of the list by cruising through the archives etc. I am thinking
about building a Rebel / Elite in the future and gathering information
right now.

Short history... Last year I finished a TEAM MiniMax ultralight that I now
have about 30 hours on, Now I'm looking for the next step (something larger
for those longer trips). I'm a current PPSEL with about 150 hours in 172's
etc.

My main 2 planes that I have been doing a bake off between is the Rebel and
the RV9. I know they are fairly different, however they also are similar in
cost and complexity. I think I am narrowing in on the Murphy products
though as I go along.

So finally a question in all this... What's the story behind the Elite vs
Rebel? What are your feelings about it thus far, and how long has the Elite
been out?

You're in luck. There are several builders in your
area. Some have or are building Rebels, others
Elite's and one is doing a hybrid.

The archives have some very recent comments about
the Rebel and Elite.

Some go Elite because they want the trike rather
than tail dragger. Some like the 180hp that you
can put in the Elite. Others enjoy the fuel
economy and reliability of the Rotax 912 that you
can use in the Rebel.

There is tremendous overlap between the two with
interesting differences. Depends what you want
to do.

I'm sure others in the Seattle area and Washington
State would be more than willing to chat and show
you the state of their projects. I'm up on Whidbey
Island. You can fly up and land outside Langley.
If you haven't landed out here before, the runway
is nestled in the trees. Use a bit of care, especially
on windy days. Flying is much better than dealing
with the ferry lines this time of year.

Hi Andy !!

Welcome to the list !!

You are not alone in your choices - for many years, the Murphy
and Van's booths were side by side at Oshkosh, and there was always
a big circle worn in the grass between them, as folks looked at each
in turn, over and over. :-)

You are right - they are both high quality, well engineered kits,
from solid, stable manufacturers. It really comes down to the kind of
flying you want to do..... If you want to fly floats sometime, or
enjoy flying & camping, flying into small, rough strips with lots of
gear, then the Rebel's for you !! I think our new, lowered price of
$13,995 US compares very well with the quick-build RV-9 price. The
Rebel comes standard with the skins cut, formed, and pre-punched, the
bulkheads & ribs pre-formed, and all the welding done & powder-coated.
The kit includes all the parts needed - wheels, tires, brakes, windshield,
and even electric trim. You have your choice of MANY different engines,
as well, and don't have to choose until your Rebel is completed right
up to the front door .. leaving lots of time to shop.

If you DO decide on a Rebel, there is LOTS of experienced
help available here on the list !!

Well, these are the things that have drawn me to the Rebel, also I am
interested in a high wing for easier entry / exit and better ground
visibility while flying around. Weight is also an issue as I am 250lbs and
want to be able to carry a passenger and some gear.
You have your choice of MANY different engines,
as well, and don't have to choose until your Rebel is completed right
up to the front door .. leaving lots of time to shop.
Thus far I am thinking of either the 235, or 0-320 for power options. I
have been cruising the archives to "catch up" a bit and it still isn't
clear to me what the difference is between the Rebel and the Elite? I am
interested in a Tail Dragger with 0-320 (most likely) with float attach,
but no floats initially, Spring gear???? The only thing I get from the
factory specs is a higher gross weight, however that was brought into
question in the archives as not much of an issue as the elite was heavier.
Was the design principle just to add tri gear, or what?
If you DO decide on a Rebel, there is LOTS of experienced
help available here on the list !!
Of course that is very evident and I am greatfull. Thanks for the advise
and info.
