Instrument Panel Labels

Looks like the list is back! Thanks Mike!!

I'm about to start cutting the first holes in my panel.. <gasp!>

Thinking ahead a little.. What sort of paint do people recommend for
the panel? I would like to find something easy, that comes in a spray
can, if possible.. Would anyone recommend something like Tremclad from
the local hardware store?

Then comes the labels.. I want something a little fancier than the
generic stick on labels that come in big sheets.. I'd rather not use
engraved stick-on labels either. I think what I am after is
silkscreening.. Does anyone know anything about silkcreening panels?

Has anyone tried laser printing onto a clear sticker sheet.. Then
adding some kind of protective coating over the panel after the stickers
are on? Does the clear sticker start to yellow with age?

Dave, I had my local radio shop cut the labels for my panel. They look
professional and did not cost an arm and a leg.

I've printed my own decals for models on clear label material, then clear
coated over it... worked great.

Dave,
Most builders now mount the instruments on a floating panel,
in front of the metal one, by cutting oversize holes in the orig.,
and mounting the extra panel on shock mounts, or just bolts with
bits of fuel line on them. The floating panel will increase the life of
your gyros, AND make all the instruments MUCH easier to work on !!

You <could> (some have ...) make the floating panel out of
1/8" Lexan (tinted is nice), then put the labels on the BACK side,
so they last forever....

A floating panel, or a panel mounted by 2 piano hinges, is
also VERY handy for the left angle panel, where the breakers & switches
go. This makes it VERY easy to get at the wiring ....

For the rest of the panel .... Canadian Tire sells a black
wrinkle finish paint in spray cans. It dries wrinkled ... You might
try to find a FLAT finish, as well, if they have it.

You will want a flat paint for the top of the panel, to keep
down reflections. Or you could use Naugahyde to match the seats ...

You just put the sheet containing the letter or word you wanted over the spot you wanted and burnished the backup paper. This left the letter(s) on the panel which could be coated with a clear protective spay when finished.
Now having said that I know there are many products on the market today that allow you to print out the words you want in the colour you want with a transparent carrier. The little machines can be expensive though.
Unfortunately no experience with laser or inkjet printing on clear sheets.

I think the Lexan on his first panel proved too thin, and he had some
cracking around the bolts ..... not sure, though. Sure looked good !
