[rebel-builders] EP420/430 Primer

Post by lawsondj » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Garry,
Since I didn't see anyone answer your question, I'll take a stab at it.
1) It is feasible to spray the material without the reducer. I have done it. It depends
on the nozzle characteristics your useing. All the reducer does is reduce the viscosity.
2) If you can't get the E500 material, I'd try straight MEK which appears to be the
primary ingredient of E500, except I'd use a max of 30 percent instead of the 50
percent max for the E500. Of course, it's best to spray a small test sample to see
if it performs to your satisfaction.

Good Luck,

I have a quart of this stuff and on the container it says to paint with
it one should buy E500 epoxy reducer and mix 2 parts catalyzed primer to
1 part reducer.

Is it feasible to spray this material without the reducer?

If not, is there something other than E500 that can be used for the same
purpose? I have a problem right now with getting the reducer. Greyhound
is going on strike and that is the normal shipping method from Edmonton
to here for such 'hazardous materials'. ie I can't get it and the
plane is sitting there waiting for it. Always something I guess.

Thanks Jack. I thought there was probably someone who knew how this worked.

[rebel-builders] EP420/430 Primer

I don't know the real answer, but here is a note and response that I got
from Polyfiber:

Sir, you need to use E-500.
Any other thinner will cause irregular film formation.
It's not a sales tool, it is strictly chemistry.

Kind regards,

Greg

Hello:
I am using your EP-430 product to protect an aluminum structure.
I am spraying the product, but I neglected to order any thinner. Can you
advise me what would be a product I can use that I can get locally? EG.
lacquer thinner be ok?

Thanks.

[rebel-builders] EP420/430 Primer

A few years ago I had the same question so I requested the MSDS on the
Reducer. The MSDS I have describes it as Poly-Fiber Reducer R 65-75. I
think it's the same one. It contains the following:
51.1% Toluene
2.8 % MEK
17.9% MIBK
17.3% Methyl n-Amyl Ketone
10.9% Ethylene Glycol Propyl Ether
I simply used a mixture of Toluene and MEK as the reducer till I got the
right viscosity for my gun/nozzle combination and the results were great.
Hope this helps.

[rebel-builders] EP420/430 Primer

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:08 pm

Thanks Tim and Tom. It looks like I will be going with the suggestion of
a non-aviation self etching primer for aluminum trucks. This info will
be useful in future for many others I'm sure.

Cheers
