[rebel-builders] Fuel shut-off valves leaking

Post by Ken » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:04 pm

The brass valves with black plastic handles do have o-rings but I'd
throw them away and use !/4 NPT hardware store ball valves. For a couple
of dollars each all (most?) are teflon and I've never had a problem with
them yet. They don't depend on any grease and they don't seem to
gradually become hard to turn. A reminder for early kits - there was a
bulletin to drill out the port to 1/4" on the early MAM valves...
Common Buna o-rings are supposed to be OK with mogas and can take a bit
lower temperature but I now use viton o-rings when I can get them.

Are there "O" rings inside? I'll be close to ACS in California for the next couple of weeks and could pick-up some new valves. Any suggestions for a ACS valve that could easily replace the MAM valve? I might pick up some "O" rings for my leaking quick drains too.

Hi Ken, I hadn't thought that. Would these 1/4 NPT hardware store valves be
for water?

Yes the common ball valves that turn 1/4 turn of the handle from the
plumbing section. Guys used to caution to test them and make sure they
had a teflon seal but I've not seen anything elso but teflon and they
are typically only about $5. ea.

I've never seen one that wouldn't shut off. The odd one that leaked thru the
shaft seal if they hadn't been shut off in a few years..but never not
shutting off.

Since I left my earlier messages I spoke with a couple other builders and
mechanics and they agree that this common teflon sealed valve works great
with fuel for years. Now I know what to look for.
Thanks again

Question is...is that not what you already have. Any newer kits I saw come
out of MAM had the typical hardware store variety...1/4" NPT Ball valve with
Teflon seats in them.

The original older kits brass valves that we had to drill the orifice out on
to get proper fuel flow where junk.

[rebel-builders] Fuel shut-off valves leaking

Post by Clay Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:04 pm

Oh. Okay, my kit is 11 years old but recall not having to drill them out.
So Wayne your thinking that I already have this hardware type with the
teflon ...? Maybe the valves are just too old or got damaged when stored
for 9 years down in my basement. I know that my brake calipers had
corossion around the pucks and the "o" rings needed to be replaced. They
were leaking and I couldn't get any brake (transmission) fluid in them.

Better late than never. You might like to try Wag Aero P/N 242B-4A. It has
a threaded boss that allows you to mount it on a plate, rather than just
having it supported by the fuel line. 3 years - no leaks.

Hi Guys,
Has anyone had problems with their MAM supplied fuel shut-off valves
leaking. The valves did see some mo gas during the fuel flow test only but
now a year later after burning only av gas they won't completely shut the
fuel flow off. Can they be repaired? Are there "O" rings inside? I'll be
close to ACS in California for the next couple of weeks and could pick-up
some new valves. Any suggestions for a ACS valve that could easily replace
the MAM valve? I might pick up some "O" rings for my leaking quick drains
too.

Thanks for your help

Hey Bob, thanks. I may just try replacing those "O" rings for now until I
get around to buying better valves. I do recall seeing some sort of clip on
the back to keep it together.
