ELITE WINGS

I am in the process of putting the bearing bases forhe torque tube
on the rear spar. The instructions say to center it on the spar without
touching the radius , the problem? is that there is no room to adjust up or
down , so if it is not level I have no way to adjust it. I already had to
slightly bend the bearing base to get it to fit at all.

ELITE WINGS

I had the same problem. I spent the better part
of a month trying to get responses out of Murphy.
I was hoping to write it all up and send to this
list when it was resolved. Not all of my issues
have been closed.

When I was able to get responses from Grant, it
seemed as though all of the dimensions of the bases
and the spar were correct. The tolerances are
very, very tight. I did some bending and some trimming
and am content that things fit, but it took a bunch
of work.

So, sounds like you have a normal situation. Tighten
up the positions of the rivets of the base and don't
just follow the implied positions in the manual.

The other area that I have not reached closer on is
the leading edge root rib. My leading edge root
ribs have a tooling hole that is exposed when you make
the cut to attach the root rib attach bracket (W-161).

I have gone around with Grant a couple of times, and
took a couple of month break. I'm going to head up
to the factory to resolve this issue directly. This
exposed tooling hole creates a built in stress point
in the wing attach. One solution is for the factory
to change the location of the tooling hole so that it
can be used as one of the six rivet holes to attach W-161.
I'll let the list know what they say.

Bijan (a very helpful former MAM tech rep) agreed that it was a good idea to
move the one rivet that was closest to that tooling hole a bit for a little more
clearance on my standard Rebel Wing.

If the idea appealed to you and this area is the same as the standard Rebel, you
could also ask Brian bgodden@murphyair.com if a doubler is OK in this
area. Keep an eye on rivet grip length if you use a doubler. I had trouble
hammering out the embossing of the rib under the W-161 and got approval to use a
packer (mostly a doubler) in this area.

I'll try to get up to the factory within a few weeks
and post to the list the results.

One other note on the torque tube bases. Grant
explained that the tight tolerances are likely due
to thicker guage material now used for the bases.
This requires extra room for bends, etc. Since
the tolerances were tight before, they are very
tight now.

Eric

When you get these issues settled, pls post the resolution here. We are
starting to
build the wings of our Elite also and would appreciate knowing if there are
revisions to
be made.

Thanks

ELITE WINGS

Bijan's recommendation makes sense: to move that
one #11 rivet hole in W-161 away from the tooling hole.
This still leaves the tooling hole exposed at the
front of the rib when the front flange is trimmed
off.

It would be nice for the factory to move the tooling
hole. It would take care of both problems.

It would also be nice to get quicker responses from
Murphy on workarounds to problems that have already
been reported to them. I'm just a bit grumpy about
the service on what has generally been a great project.

This group has been great with ideas and recommendations.

Thanks,
