[rebel-builders] Elite Diesel

Post by N.Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:04 pm

Hi Al

Yes, the tielert diesel does have a major fuel return and associated temp
rise, but the one I plan to use does not have the same percentage fuel
return. Still, an fuel/air heat exchanger would be good idea if it ever
looked like being a problem. Still no word on a delivery date for my engine,
I understand the smaller 3 cylinder engines are due to be modded in the next
2 weeks to cure a possible leak at the preheaters, but then hopefully they
will crack on and get my 4 cylinder design sorted.

Just started the second wing in January, so the plan is to get that
finished, then rig the wings onto the fus, then finish off the wiring and
other bits on the fus, then hopefully the floats will be here so probably
fit those, and by then hopefully the engine will be available (you'll
probably notice a lot of hopefullys in there :-)

Good luck on the ferry flight if that comes off, should be quite an easy
trip in one of those.

Nigel:

How much have you looked into your diesel engine installation? I have a
potential ferry flight to do in a DA42, which, as you know, uses Thielert
diesels. They send a considerable fraction of the fuel coming out of the
high pressure injection pump back to the tanks via a fuel cooler.
Nevertheless, the fuel gets pretty hot. The fuel temperature redline is at
75C! If your system is anything like that, it's going to make for some
interesting installation challenges.

I certainly see the imperative to switch to diesel, though, with jet A about
1/4 the price of avgas. I wonder if that's the way we're headed in North
America?

Al
