[rebel-builders] Moose: New tail doublers, access holes, etc

That "primary" is one hell of a doubler Ted!! I'm seriously asking the
question.....not poking fun......Do you really feel that much is necessary??
and if so will the tailcone sections forward of it not buckle on the sides
now instead, now that you've moved the "weak" area of the airplane? (what I
call BBAS = Bigger Band-Aid Syndrome) At the rate this is progressing the
entire side skin of the Moose will need to be .063 pretty soon.

I'm watching all these Meese mods with great interest, as Rob is pretty
close to buying his Moose back from me and will be looking for guidance.

BTW...when I start taking pictures in the shop I'm always sure to set my
small hammer off to the side before taking pictures...especially the 5 pound
"trim" hammer! LOL

There continue to be a number of design changes to strengthen the tail on
the Moose. I had severe cracking after a trip to Alaska on my FUS-358
leading to a factory service bulletin. Since then several builders have
added further doublers to the design. Even after installing the factory
tail upgrades, I still had kinks appear in FUS-422 (tail wrap). Dale
Fultz
came up new tail brackets and a new stinger. I decided to add a series of
doublers to both strengthen the stinger stress points and add strength to
the bulkhead H attach structure.

I just uploaded 11 pictures to file area 107 - S/M - Fuselage showing:

- New access holes (1 new factory one & 1 new one I added)
- 3 new doublers for the external section of the tail
- New stiffeners for bulkhead H

Please email me if you have questions.

[rebel-builders] Moose: New tail doublers, access holes, etc

You're right in all respects Wayne. You should go to Scott's Moose
"completion" page and click on Thomas Thomas' Moose page and see his
tail--you ain't seen nothing until you see that one!

Regarding my primary doubler design, it stems from the kinks I had in the
tailcone wrap (FUS-422)--after--I put in the tail service bulletin parts. I
have pictures of the kinks if you haven't seen them before (think I posted
them to the list). Anyway, I was just going to put a smaller doubler to
tie in the bulkhead H area to the forward tailwrap, then I figured, why not
link it to pick up the rivets for the FUS-357 bulkhead (fwd horz stab
support bulkhead).

Then, in the rear, I wanted to pick up part of the pivot assembly and some
of the tailwrap...same story--I figured why not pick up the FUS-358 (rear
horz stab support bulkhead). Then my friend said, "Heck, you're that far
why not have one bulkhead for everything?" So, it sort of progressed into
what you see now.

All that being said, I'll bet the three pieces of 0.036" 2024 T3 all
together don't weigh more than 3 pounds (plus probably a pound of proseal of
course <grin>).

I had a couple of other builders over today looking at things; we all agree
that we're simply moving the ultimate stress point forward to the F or G
bulkhead area. But, we've added side hat-channel in those areas.

The ultimate answer won't be available for a year or so until I've had a
whole bunch of off-field landings and we can see what, if any, problems crop
up.

Another builder from Wyoming is coming by next week to look at the tail and
such. Be interesting to see his input.

But, by all means, go look at the affair Thomas Thomas designed...and be
sure to email with your thoughts then!

Ted
