Ian,
It must have been an oversight at the factory - they do have
fairly detailed instructions, with drawings, and they really help !

I'm jealous !! I'd dearly LOVE a 912-S - the extra horses would
make FINR a skyrocket !!!

The GSC props that Murphy supplies have worked well. They're
inexpensive (about $395 CDN), and you can order replacement blades
for about $200. They are wood, with a composite leading edge that
stands up well to weather & rain, and are ground-adjustable.

If I had lots of money, I'd use the GSC variable pitch prop
(about $1,500). It's full in-flight adjustable, and made for the 912s !

We have found that 2 blade props work better than 3 blades, and
the Warp Drive blades are skinny, so they usually suggest 3 blades to
handle the horsepower. <Purely personal preference> -> for the Rotax,
I'd use the GSC. Have had 9 years of good experiences !

Whichever prop you go for, it is a good idea to make a cover
for it to keep the UV off. The wood is OK, but the varnish will deteriorate
in sunlight, and let in moisture. Composite gliders are ALL painted
WHITE to reduce effects of sunlight - don't know WHY W-D leave their
props black !!

Thanks bobp for your detailed response. It surely will help. One
problem however is that I did not get any instructions at all from the
factory and I am really working in the dark.
Unfortunately, the only complete Rebel that I know of is 1500 miles away
so it is difficult to see just how he did his cowling.

I have a Rotax 912s 100hp engine on order and it will be here in a few
weeks. I have not decided just what propellor to use but lean toward a
Warp drive. Any suggestions?

I would appreciate some pictures from anyone who is using a Rotax. It
sure would help.

Thanks and regards

Ian Donaldson

Thanks to Wayne O'Shea for the introduction to his site. I found the
tour most interesting and enlightening.

Slowly but surely I am gaining the information needed.

Ian,
I don't know, as nobody here has an "S" flying yet ... I suspect
that the 72" would still be ok, just at a different pitch. I know that the
GSC in-flight variable prop uses the same blade size & shape, & it's rated
at 100 hp.

There ARE a few 912's with the high-compression piston upgrades,
supposedly 95 hp, and these work well with the 72" 2 blade GSC.

What do Rotax and GSC have to say ??? You might try contacting
the folks at Rotec - www.rotec.com for an opinion. They are the
GSC & Rotax distributor ...

Thanks to bobp and Wayne for their detailed answers.

Bobp, you say that you have had great success with the GSC props (72 x
2) over the years,
but these were fitted to 80 hp engines. Would this size of prop be
satisfactory for the 100hp Rotax? What would you think would be the
optimum ?

Hi !
I think they must be overstocked with 68" 3 blades !! The 2 blades
at 72" definitely work better. In any case, I didn't think they made
a variable pitch prop with 3 blades, only ground adjustable ...
There ARE folks here running the 72" 2 blades on 100 hp. 912's ...

The epoxy leading edge protection is an absolute MUST - without
it mosquitos or rain drops will destroy the prop in a matter of minutes !
We've only used the wood - work great, and cheap ! They haven't offered
composite for very long, and I've never seen one in this area. Might be
good..... Would NOT go for composite with a foam core - they seem too
weak.

HTH !

I contacted Rotec regarding their recommendation for a propellor
combination to suit the 912s and they refereed my inquiry to GSC.

GSC has responded with the recommendation of a 68" 3 blade.

They offer props with/without leading edge protection. Do you have any
thoughts re these.

Does anyone have preferences for wood or composite and if so why?
