V-Brace and a V8

Guess it's a good thing I have one then, even if it's not reinforced.
Thanks for the info. In my estimation, my firewall forward weighs about 550
pounds. I think I read somewhere that the Lycosaur 0540 with a constant
speed prop comes in somewhere near 480. I'm about 70 pounds heavier. About
13% increase I think. CG is 7.87 aft of the datum. Not too bad. A little
nose heavier than most but not way out. Plus, I'm not going to do any hard
landings. :-)

Mike,

When I discussed using a V8 in my plane with Murphy they recommended the V
brace. They suggested it because of the heavier engine. They indicate that
in their smaller planes when heavier engines were used they saw some damage
to the lower firewall on hard landings. The thought is that on the hard
landing the moment arm of the engine is such that it causes large
compression of the lower firewall attach points. The V brace distributes
the load in such situations to the upper part of the airframe. Just some
thoughts.

Looks like a good design. I'm gonna wait until I actually develop damage to
mine before I go through the trouble of removing the windshield. Since the
V-brace is really only needed for float operations can I assume floats are
in your future?

I just uploaded two pictures to S/M 107-Fuselage of a new FUS-0717, V-Brace,
design by Dale Fultz (thanks Dale!). I annotated the pictures with the
measurements of all the components. All are of 4130 except for the washer,
which is stainless. The design uses 3/8" bolts.
