Hi Mike My vote is for the Ameri-king 121.5 it uses D cells and costs about
$200us. I think it will be a while before we're forced to upgrade even
though the sattelites are to be turned off in 2009. If you're overdue on
your flight plan the herc will still come looking and they will be
listening on 121.5 I think the 406 ELT's will come down in price a lot more
than the difference now. You can buy a 406 PLB with GPS for under $500
already

For what it's worth, the DF equipment in our Civil Air Patrol aircraft here
in Alaska only works on 121.5. And we only use that to get us in the
vicinity, then we use good old fashioned build/fade of the tone on the comm.
radio while flying a criss cross pattern to pin point the signal.

That said, the ability to put your GPS coordinates on the 406 signal is
great. If everybody had that being a search & rescue pilot would be easy!
Instead of half a dozen 10 mile grids to search, we could fly to within 10
meters.

Mike
