G'day Stan ...

I'd be using 6061 T6 (what the Rebel family are made from)

It's much less hassle corrosion wise than 2024 T3 (Cessna & Piper metal) & it resists cracking when bent a WHOLE LOT better !

Subject: [rebel-builders] Rudder Trim - non Murphy

I have been reading this forum for awhile now and am planning on building a
Murphy when I finish my current experimental (fabric, 100mph) I realize this is
a Murphy site however with all the expertise here I was hoping someone can
provide some advice. What aluminum alloy is recommended for a fixed rudder
trim tab? I have been told a soft alloy to withstand adjusting without
cracking, and also told to use a tempered alloy to provide resistance to
deflection during flight. My wife and I plan on tagging along with the
Ramblers this Summer and hope to meet some of you.

Thanks Stan

[rebel-builders] Rudder Trim - non Murphy

Hi Stan !

Happy to hear from you - no problem getting answers here !

I think most of the guys use 6061-T6, maybe .025 or .032 -
some drill a row of small holes vertically on the tab, just aft
of the rudder attach point, to give an easier bend line.
It'll take quite a few bends - shouldn't take more than a
couple to get a position you're comfortable with.

A fairly long, narrow tab, maybe 2 1/2" wide, by about
maybe 8" long, should work better than a short wide one,
and will need only a small deflection. If you attach it with
Avex rivets, it'll be easy to replace, if you ever need to.

Looking forward to meeting up on the Ramble ! :-)
