[rebel-builders] Elite Brakes

Hi Mike !

If you are sure you don't have any air in the lines, then everything
is pretty well normal. Wait until you get a bit of rust on the disks !!

The original MAM brakes would stand you on your nose, if
everything was seated in, so you are much safer the way you are ! ;-)
Those brakes were designed to use standard Rapco pads for
Cleveland brakes of the same size, so no problem getting
replacements. You might have some oil or fluid on yours -
it'll burn off in time (You ARE using ATF, aren't you ??) :-)

Braking is still poor on my Elite. Did the burn in a couple times which
helped. I even repositioned the master cylinder clevis on the foot pedals to
give more pressure. The best I have now is just enough to hold the airplane
during run up. Something is not right with them, that's all I am doing is
pushing my pedals through the floor before this is over. They are JDM wheels
and maybe the same brand caliper. The masters are Matco. I read MAM's website
and they claim there own cast iron pad system?? I am thinking either the
masters don't match the calipers or the pad material sucks.
Any thoughts? Does anyone know what size or model pad I need to order for
these assemblies? I have no info to tell me what fits what.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

I did bleed from the bottome up, used ACS brake fluid which looks and smells
like ATF, no oil ever on brake surfaces, used wire braid and aluminum tubing
on pressure side, no plastic, pedal movement very small, suspect no air. I
know what you mean Wayne, we had someone over here stand one up on the prop
on start up, makes a hell of a noise!
Thanks,
Mike

[rebel-builders] Elite brakes

I mounted my cylinders to the floor right off the start. The leverage to
them looks about as good as I can get it. Any other Elites out there that
beat this issue?

Hey Builders

When I got my Rebel I also had brake problems with inadequate brake
pressure, as it turned out the geometry of the master cylinders, they were
mounted on the rudder pedal up right tubes. Murphy has a upgrade that shows
the master cylinders mounted on the floor. which I did and now my brakes are

prefect. ( before I changed the geometry I could only hold the plane back at

1800 rpm with a LOT of pedal pressure and now a can hold at full throttle )

Do the VG's slow don your cruise at all ?

I am a new tail dragger pilot with a total 16 hours and so far my landings
are not too bad !

Hi builders,

I been out of touch with the group for a year and a half and had to see
how
it was going out there. I been in contact with a couple builders since and
discussed some problems.

My Elite now has been flying for 2 years and about 110 hours. It is such a
great airplane! It seems to have the best of both worlds in short field
and
cruise. I add VG's to it about a year ago which knocked 10 mph off my
stall.

I still don't have the greatest brakes, maybe ok for a tail dragger but
wish
I had a bit more. I believe the problem is inadequate brake pressure due
to
geometry, but I haven't measured it with a gauge yet. I did recently
replace
my pads and found out for some reason I can't get long enough rivets. Does
anybody know what the deal is here. My back plates are aluminum and about
twice as thick as the steel ones in certified aircraft. I ended up machine
countersinking the rivets deeper into the backplate so that standard
rivets
would work. Maybe I weakened them by doing this?

I see some disappointment with MAM in some recent letters, I used to get
frustrated too when I was building. Hang in there the airplane is great
and
worth the effort.
