G'day Mike ...

Both the 0-320 Rebels I have / know of - their brakes WILL NOT hold the plane still with full RPM !

Braking is still poor on my Elite. Did the burn in a couple times which helped. I even repositioned the master cylinder clevis on the foot pedals to give more pressure. The best I have now is just enough to hold the airplane during run up. Something is not right with them, that's all I am doing is pushing my pedals through the floor before this is over. They are JDM wheels and maybe the same brand caliper. The masters are Matco. I read MAM's website and they claim there own cast iron pad system?? I am thinking either the masters don't match the calipers or the pad material sucks.
Any thoughts? Does anyone know what size or model pad I need to order for these assemblies? I have no info to tell me what fits what.
Thanks,
Mike Betti

[rebel-builders] Brakes

Hi Mike
I had similar problems with 049R. Started with Matco's when new in /99 then
switched to MAM brakes and wheels w/Matco cylinders and 8:50x6 AirTrac
tyres. I began having problems with the plastic brake lines
blowing -frequently- (they may not have been original Murphy-issue tubing).
Anyway, after much frustration we replaced all plastic lines with steel and
braking improved substantially. I am able to hold brakes and add power to
pick up the tail for wheel taxi or STOL T/O. Am currently on amphibs and
continue to have excellent brake function.

Only other suggestion is to be sure to fill through the bleeder from the
bottom with a pump-can to ensure no air in the lines.
Don't remember the number but I got a standard Rapco pad from shop/parts
inventory- it was a while ago but I think it crossed to a PA-24 (Cherokee).
Best regards, Angus

[rebel-builders] Brakes

Again to be contrarian I have JDM brakes with plastic brake lines and no
special burn in procedure. Since day one they will hold at full power
from the subaru (with ballast weight in tail) with modest pedal
pressure. The pedals sit vertical when not being pushed and are fairly
firm with little forward movement when pushed. Note that if you have a
lot of pedal deflection happening, or if the pedals tilt forward much at
the rest position, the hydraulic pressure will decrease both because of
less favourable pedal to cylinder geometry and due to less push force
from your foot. I have seen mismatched master cylinders on other
homebuilts where the master had a piston diameter that was too large
but that is certainly not a problem on my Rebel.
