[rebel-builders] Moose: Avionics and Antennas

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:55 am

Hello Bob,

I had two 430's on my Moose as well as glide slope, ELT; I just didn't have
a storm scope or TAS. Both GPS antennas were on the cabin roof. The comm
antennas were right behind them and worked well in that location. The ELT
antenna was under the dorsal fin (I assume it worked fine there <grin>).
The VOR antenna's were on the top of the tail / vertical stabilizer pointed
to the rear. The localizer/glide slope & transponder antennas were on the
belly, just aft of the seats.

I can email you pics to your email addr if you want them.

[rebel-builders] Moose: Avionics and Antennas

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:56 am

Make sure you have three feet of separation between COMM antennas and not
too close to the GPS antennas. You definitely want two of those. One is
feasable with a splitter but eliminates features you may want. One VOR
antenna on the tail with a splitter is fine. The V-shaped antenna commonly
seen there is for VOR, localizer, and glideslope. The two antennas most
commonly found on the belly are for marker beacons and transponder. I
mounted those under the belly with access through the gearbox area. I had
to cut an access plate under the pilot's seat area for the rearmost mounting
point for the marker beacon antenna (CI-102 from ACS). I wouldn't put the
ELT antenna under the dorsal fin just because you might want to get to it
someday. I definitely wouldn't put it under a metal dorsal fin. You'll
need a quadraplexor splitter (CI-1125 from ACS) to operate two NAV and two
glideslope receivers from one antenna.

I've talked to Bob Archer about his antennas mounted in the wingtips. He
told me they are in common use in many RV type airplanes and are reporting
no problems. There is no reason that I can see for it not to work in a
fiberglass wingtip in a Murphy airplane except special precautions must be
taken in the installation with strobes. I may be able to dig up Bob's phone
number if you want to talk to him. FWIW, despite his reassurance and my
knowledge of RF systems (I manage a satellite tracking station) I decided to
mount mine on the roof for shorter cable runs, easier installation, and a
bit of old fashioned fear of anything new.
