I currently use a GSC 72" on skis and on wheels and I'm happy with that performance and on floats a three blade WD, I think 66 or 68". I've experimented a little with pitch and have gotten either good take-off or reasonable cruise. I'm now considering buying an in-flight adjustable, 72" made by Ivoprop.

I'm particularly interested in anyone's experience with this prop on floats using a 912. I only know one person a couple of hours from me who has this combination on an Aerocruiser and he is quite happy with it. He says he's getting max. rpm of 5800 on take-offs with minor throttle adjustments and cruise settings at 5200 to 5400. It sounds as though this would be ideal for what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have any additional suggestions or comments.

Aurele,
The only info that I can offer on the IVO adustable prop is that they had problems a few years ago. The tang that is welded to the blade angle adustment shaft was breaking somehow. I believe the problems were attributed to improper heat treatment of the parts. They may have solved the problems by now. You may want to research this more. Good luck.

Have heard of several problems with cracks in the IVO blades, including
a Rebel builder who replaced 2 of them in under 50 hours, before giving up.

GSC make a very nice in-flight adjustable prop, all mechanical,
for the 912. FWIW, we had good results flying the 72" 2 blade GSC on
floats ....

I HAVE AN IVO MAGNUM, GROUND ADJUSTABLE ON #376 WITH 125 HOURS ON IT. NO
PROBLEMS. I HAVE FOUND THAT IT CLIMBS BETTER AND GOES FASTER WITH 2 BLADES
RATHER THAN 3.

You might find that the IVO has been fine on the 912 if you ask on RAH or maybe
talk to IVO. Like the GSC, this has got to be a popular enough combination that
several people know whether it works or not. Sometimes props that have direct
drive problems work well with a geared drive.

Bob - Do you perhaps recall if the problems with the IVO were confined to high
horsepower and direct drive applications?

There was also an Italian?? in flight adjustable hub at sun n fun that uses the
Warp Drive blades but I didn't see it and don't know any details. I personally
have ruled out the NSI unit due to their apparent business practices.

Ken,
The Rebel that had problems was Kent VanderVelde's, and I recall
that he had an O-235 Lycoming. At about the same time, there were a
couple of in-flight blade losses on geared Rotax 2-strokes, so many people
decided to 'wait awhile' for the Magnum to get 'improved' - that <seems>
to have happened now ....

The GSC in-flight variable pitch prop is SO appealing, because
it is SIMPLE, and all mechanical. A vernier control pulls a cable attached
to a bellcrank on top of the engine. The bellcrank pushes a large rod
through the hollow crank on the re-drive, and pushes on a huge thrust
bearing that moves blade stubs to change the blade pitch. No wiring,
no brushes to wear, no hydraulics, and should be very low maintenance.

I run a 3-blade IvoProp in-flight adjustable Magnum on an O320 Lycoming and
my understanding about blade cracking is that 1) early units sandwiched the
blades between flat surfaced flanges. Present props have knurled flanges
which grip the blades more securely 2) the torque on the bolts compressing
the flanges on the carbon fiber blades is extremely critical - the torque
wrench must be calibrated to something like 5% (Off the shelf spring type
torque wrenches are often more than 50% out of calibration), and 3) some
engines -- especially auto conversions just set up too much vibration.
IvoProp now provide stainless steel tape that is applied between the blades.
Pre-flight inspection showing tearing or distortion of the tape is said to
flag potential problems.

I stress that my info is largely second hand, however, the previous owner
flew over100 hours on the prop. I've added only about a dozen to that
total.
