Hello!
Just wondering how to best file down the outside of a tube. In particular,
my
torque tube, which fit nicely into it's collar and over the end plug, but
did
only before chromating. So I used a cylindrical reamer on my drill press and
rotated the collar and plug, shaving off enough to allow for the
reapplication
of the chromate. Doing the inside of the collar was no problem because the
reaming bit was on the inside of the collar. But with the plug, I had to
shave
off the outside of the plug which meant very little surface contact, butting
outside to outside. This made for a rather uneven surface on the plug.
I ran into the same problem with the push-pull tube assembly.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan:
Fearing your situation, I did not chromate my torque tubes. Rather, I used
the Tube Seal oil liberally on the inside and on the mating surfaces of the
plug and collar.
You can achieve the same effect over time by applying LPS to the gap
between the collar and the tube.
Being that the tube is relatively thin, I decided that removing material
from it would not be a good idea.
Purple Scotchbrite always works well to remove chromate from surfaces where
you do not want it.
Finally, if you must chromate between surfaces like this, some folks I know
just do the assembly while the chromate is wet.
