Tim,

The drilling into the finger only hurts for a little
while. LOL!!! A few weeks ago my drill stop came loose
and I drilled through the spar...into the bottom of my
thumb and all the way through up to the thumbnail.
OUCH!! Best advice I can give you is to have a first
aid kit nearby. You WILL get many nicks and cuts that
bleed like crazy. Have fun building.

The only thing worse than drilling through your finger is drilling through
your wifes finger.

Hey Tim!

I did the EXACT SAME thing on my finger! LOL!

Of course, I bled all over the place but as I went and asked for help from another builder with a first-aid kit, I found that I had truly been accepted into the fraternity!

Anyway, I couple of things to be careful of on the rudder and elevators: the end rib (the one at an angle) is going to come up short since it is attached on an angle but it is the same size as all the others. You can either live with the inch or so gap is it gonna leave or make a longer one using a rib as a template for the forming blocks an interpolating. I went the latter route. Also, beware the tubular spar end cap rivets. They can interfere between the top and the sides unless you measure carefully and stagger them a bit (just a bit). Also, watch the final rivets in the ribs where the skin bends. My holes were nicely staggered, but at the end of the rib there is just not a lot of room inside the ribs in any case. I ended up shortening the grips a bit. Oh, and don't forget the doubling mods on the end cap rib and the skins.

Hello, Group!
I have been trying for a week now to find time to get this message out. The
short version is that we (my brother, Mike, and I) have received our Rebel kit.
We got it last Thursday, and have been very busy looking at and for parts so
we could complete the inventory. We have now done so, and have started on
making flaps and ailerons.

I need to mention that I am impressed by the quality of the parts. Most
everything we looked at seemed well made and properly done. I guess the
real test will be how all the parts fit together. I was also impressed by the
nice job that the guys packing the crate did. Everything was well protected
and organized. I suspect that they have done the packing before.

I still don't quite understand why it took 19 weeks to receive the kit, but that
was not really a factor to me because I have been up to my eyebrows (and I
am 6' 4") in trying to finish up my current house building project. As you might
guess, I didn't get everything done as I wanted, but we got carpet down last
month, and that makes everything a lot nicer.

Be forewarned everyone, I soon will be begging for tips and clues as this
project goes forward. In return, I will be offering advice to others as my
experience grows. I may also get on some nerves as I seek understanding of
some of the problems that I will run into. But be assured that we are of good
spirits and have a standing offer to trade beer for correct answers.
That is it for now. Typing is a little bit of a chore tonight as I .... ahem.... ran
a #40 drill bit under my fingernail today.

I know, I know. I won't do it again. I promise. Now, where is that little
wood block.......

Drill into your finger? Come on guys, I did that at age twelve and learned my
lesson! Never did it again! Now for my toe, that's a different story for another
time. I once met a guy who was missing three fingers from his left hand; a
home building accident. I asked him if it hurt when he did it, and he
responded with: "Yes, the first time" ... true story, THREE times he cut off a
finger with a radial arm saw! Good thing it wasn't a four or five bedroom
house!

Congrats on receiving the kit Tim and Mike: It is an exciting beginning. As
far as drilling your finger and "I won't do that again" dream on. I am
working on my 3rd Rebel (5th aircraft) and I was having a hard time scraping
off dried blood on a floor panel I was assembling yesterday. Yes I generally
use a back up piece of wood when I can but just wait until the one you use
happens to have an existing hole thru it right where your drilling, or your
tired and not really concentrating, or your wife/girlfriend comes over naked
because she is tired of being an aircraft widow. There are lots of reasons
it will happen again - just part of the fun - Keep bandages handy, blood is
hard to remove, even lacquer thinner doesn't work. Bob J Rebel 192/731

Thanks for all the comments. I think I hit a nerve with the "drill the
finger" story. (Pun Intended)
The nice part about this is that I get to show my friends "the finger". So I
guess you know by now which one I hit.
Now, I need to confess that I must lead a very dull life compared to Bob J.
If I were to experience what Bob is referring to below, I am not sure what
would happen. Maybe that is why the carpenter guy in the other post cut off
his finger three separate times.
As far as getting blood off the aluminum goes, maybe I should leave that
plastic on for as long as I can.! :-)

Thanks again, everyone.

Now I know why my empty weight was so high, it's all of that dried blood
under the floor -- just part of the fun. If I had a nickel for every time I
cut, bruised, bled, etc. while building - I could probably buy another
airplane.
