Steve,
We had the same issue with our Lyc O-360. Never could come up with a workable idea. Then saw the Van's RV intake box and decided to use it because it uses a large K&N filter and filters "carb heat" air as well. It is a very nice piece of work and with its long "snout" can be rotated to point more directly at the speed cowl designated intake area. The rub is that there is an interference of about 3/4 inch between the lower left and bottom of the Van's airbox and the bottom of the speed cowl. That would require some fiberglass work to provide the clearance. Not being content with being tangled in that modification we elected to add the Van's add on intake to the bottom of the speed cowl. That way the intake can be positioned on the speed cowl to best meet the airbox snout.

Some work but I believe it will provide adequate combustion air as well, filtering all of it, and lend a distinctive appearance. Probably add at least 50 knots as well. :):)

PS - This is a case study in the domino effect of modifications!
