[rebel-builders] Moose/M-14P FWF Components

Hello Jack,

I have the Positech oil cooloer

I have an oil screen by Aviation Development Corporation, which I like much
better than filters I've had on previous planes.

I've heard that one or two folks used a large oil tank from a diesel truck,
but don't know that for sure.

Need some help,

A few questions for you folks using the M-14P engine.
1) What OIL COOLER did you settle on (make and size)?
2) Do you have a separate OIL FILTER, or are you relying on the filter
that's in the engine?
3) Is there an after market OIL TANK (14 Qt capacity) available or do people
have to fab their own tank?

Any reply is appreciated-thanks

Jack, here are a couple of links to Nascar Dry Sump Oil tanks that are avail on ebay. These tanks have bungs and heaters. You can have the vents cut off and or modified. I like the first one................ but these things come up all the time.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NASCAR-P ... enameZWDVW

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NASCAR-4 ... enameZWD1V

I think these tanks are workable, with a heater wrap and all.

Hello Ted,

Thanks for the info. Yes it appears the oil tank may be a problem. I found an old stainless steel oil tank for a military constant speed prop application. It's about the right size but kind of heavy with huge special fittings on it. I'd have to cut it apart and rework it pretty extensively. Probably not worth the effort.

Hi Jack,

Before leaving Murphy I did some research on upgraded oil coolers for
one company anyways
Positech's still saying that the P010901 is still the best to be used on
the M-14P
Murphy never provided as long as I was there an oil filter in the
firewall forward kits.

However, the Lycoming Engines have some upgrades on the oil coolers.

As for Oil Tanks

Some make their own
Murphy is developing their own at the factory, it was still in the
making when I left there.
There is another Customer whois selling Finished Oil Taniks for the
M-14P but I can't remember his name.(Sorry)

Hi Jack ! (Can't say that around the airport !! ;-) )

I thought that Murphy sold an oil tank for the M-14 ... think it
might have been a modified truck air filter tank - tall & cylindrical.

How about George Coy, at Gesoco Ind., in Swanton, VT ????

Hello Nancy--good to hear from you.

Thanks for the oil cooler P/N.
Let me know if you recall who is making oil tanks for sale.
One piece of info that someone should be able to answer is: Assuming the tank
is placed high on one side of the firewall, what is the max allowable tank diameter
without substantially interferring with the engine mount and rear engine components?
I can't tell myself since I don't my engine mount yet.
By the way, it's my understanding that Murphy will no longer supply M-14P engine
mounts without the customer FIRST providing the mounting ring. A very inconvenient
arrangement.

Hello Bob,

If they do sell oil tanks it's sort of a mystery. It's not mentioned on the website
for accessories.

I haven't contacted George Coy yet, good idea. However, I have seen pictures
of M-14P oil tanks meant for aerobatic aircraft and they appear too large in diameter
for use with the Murphy engine mount.

Hi Jack !

The website is a sore point !! It IS being completely re-worked,
and will be a much more useful resource very soon now ....

The factory has just completed an aluminum oil tank for the
Moose. It's passed testing, and full production will start soon -
you should be able to get one within about 6 weeks. This tank
is over 8 lb. lighter than the original steel tank they used to sell !

The rings for the engine mounts are getting VERY difficult to
source, that's why Murphy is asking builders to supply them, as
they often come with the engines - and they just can't find any !

Oil coolers are available now, and have been for a while,
directly from Murphy.

Hi Bob,

That's great news on the tank and oil cooler. Thanks

As for the engine rings, the only source I've seen is on the Kimball
Enterprises website on their Murphy Moose support page.
Of course the dilemna is, when you pull the ring off the engine to
send out to have it welded up into an engine mount, how do you support
the engine in the meantime? I guess you can always turn it upside down
and rest it on a truck tire.

Hi Bob,

That's great news on the tank and oil cooler. Thanks

As for the engine rings, the only source I've seen is on the Kimball
Enterprises website on their Murphy Moose support page.
Of course the dilemna is, when you pull the ring off the engine to send
out to have it welded up into an engine mount, how do you support the
engine in the meantime? I guess you can always turn it upside down and
rest it on a truck tire.

Hi Jack !

The website is a sore point !! It IS being completely re-worked,
and will be a much more useful resource very soon now ....

The factory has just completed an aluminum oil tank for the
Moose. It's passed testing, and full production will start soon - you
should be able to get one within about 6 weeks. This tank is over 8
lb. lighter than the original steel tank they used to sell !

The rings for the engine mounts are getting VERY difficult to
source, that's why Murphy is asking builders to supply them, as they
often come with the engines - and they just can't find any !

Oil coolers are available now, and have been for a while, directly
from Murphy.

Hello Bob,

If they do sell oil tanks it's sort of a mystery. It's not mentioned
on the
website
for accessories.

I haven't contacted George Coy yet, good idea. However, I have
seen
pictures
of M-14P oil tanks meant for aerobatic aircraft and they appear too
large in
diameter
for use with the Murphy engine mount.

Hi Jack ! (Can't say that around the airport !! ;-) )

I thought that Murphy sold an oil tank for the M-14 ... think it
might have been a modified truck air filter tank - tall &
cylindrical.
How about George Coy, at Gesoco Ind., in Swanton, VT ????

[rebel-builders] Moose/M-14P FWF Components

You might find something in the car racing line. I don't know about the M-14
requirements but this
(http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categoryd ... code=15008) is a 7 quart tank
from Moroso. They have a 5 quart also.

Peterson has 12 quart units here
(http://www.vacmotorsports.com/cgi-bin/s ... n=Peterson)

I'd expect you can find many other options.

Cheers,

Dave

Your right Mike, Kimball Enterprises has a lot of good stuff Moose/M-14P related,
but not oil tanks.

Don't know for sure that they offer an oil tank but Kimball Enterprises also
has a lot of stuff for the Moose/M14 firewall forward.
