Server is moving!

Post by Mike Davis » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:47 pm

This is just a heads up...

It's only been a year and a half since I sold my Internet business, but
they have just been acquired by a large regional Internet provider. This
means my "deal" with the company that bought me out to keep my server on
their network is over. The new company wants $300 a month to host my
system, which is out of the question... for those of you that may have
wandered around the server a little know that I host the Rebel site and
lists, and a couple other less used special interest sites. Nothing on
there that actually pays anything.

I started by looking into ways to run the server from my house, but
unfortunately I'm out of the cable service area, to far for wireless, and
none of the newer high speed connections are even in the Fairbanks area yet.

I have, however made an arrangement with a co-worker who does have a cable
modem at his place to let me put the server at his house. I hope that a
cable modem will provide adequate speed so most visitors would not know the
difference.

I only bring this to everyone's attention because there is the possibility
that these services could be interrupted for a while. I am going to try
and build a completely new system here in Alaska and transfer all the data
over before they pull the plug on me back in Maryland. Even if service is
interrupted, I have made backups of some essential information and will get
the list back up and running with all current members and post a "back
online" message to the list to announce it.

Again, hopefully you'll never even know the change has happened. I just
didn't want to disappear without letting everyone know what was going on.

Mike

Thanks Wayne, I don't know why once in a while a message will make it to
the archives, but now out to the members... I'm sure glad this one wasn't lost!
