[rebel-builders] Prop for sale (what I'm flying now)

Hi Drew,
I should'a known this question was going to be asked!!
Well, I'm flying behind a 3 blade composite prop made by Catto props. 68"
dia, 46" pitch, a beautiful white with blue tips. And it weighs 13 lbs. Cost?
1850.00 and that included leading edge tape.
Am I happy with it? OH BOY AM I !!!!
Let me start with this. Like Walter K, I'm running a 150 hp 0-320 a2b. I
really liked the way the 3 blade Warp prop performed here in the low lands
(Michigan) and I had actually won a quickest off the water contest against some
pretty stiff competition. 300 hrs and I found the cracks on the blades. Sent
the prop and hub (3blade) back to warp drive and they sent me back a 4 blade.
During the time the prop was off I contacted Catto props, sorta on a whim,
to see if he was interested in a seaplane prop. He's known for his Long-ez
props but they are the go fast pusher prop guys. He convinced me. 10 long months
later it arrived. That is the only bad news.
When we talked about what I wanted in performance we together came up with
a 3 blade that turns 2400 on the initial spin up and maxes out at 2750rpm. He
hit those number right on!! The warp drive had almost a 600 rpm spread. The
Catto is as quick off the water as the warp drive was when it was set in the
race mode and yet it still will pull me thru the air at 100 mph @2450 rpm,
when the warp drive would barely make 85 at that rpm setting and pitched real
fine.
What I lost is the ability to adjust the pitch which I did several times.
I do miss that. What I gained is a prop that really performs well across a
wider range. A little more on that is I really feel that the Warp didn't
perform that well at altitude, something to due with the cord length maybe? The
Catto seems to pull much better at altitude, say 10,500 ft.( I still fly high
over lake Mich going to OSH)
Would I change anything? Hmm, well maybe a little more pitch, but so much
of my flying is short hops I really like to get up and off the little lakes
quickly. It's not uncommon to touch 8 different lakes in an hour of flying.
The reason I held on to the warp for this long was to be sure that the
Catto would do that as well. If it had not I'd have put the warp back on and
sent the Catto back for adjustment.
I'm happy so the Warp is for sale. Pictures on request

Curt,
I'd like to see some pictures of the new prop, if you have time.

Anybody know the scoop on the electric prop hub that Warp has been
developing ?

Oddy I haven't felt the need to adjust my 72" (3 wide blades) Warp other
than once in ground testing. Since I've only got a bit over 11 degrees
of pitch, I might be a bit overpropped as most guys report using more
pitch on these props.... Presently I see a nice quiet 2300 rpm at
takeoff. Cruising is anywhere between 2100 and 2450. It will go to 2600
WOT. I think that I'm making about as much power as a fixed pitch 150
hp 0-320 during takeoff but that I'm generally cruising at signicantly
lower power.

Ken, have you tried pitching your Warp to achieve 2650 rpm WOT? I recall on
the Lyc, the Warp had quite a thrust boost at higher rpm, and your soob
would be making more power then, too. You might have to turn higher rpm for
the same cruise speed, but assume that shouldn't be a problem, unless it
gets too noisy. I found that even on the Lyc, I had to cruise at a higher
rpm to achieve the same speed, but the fuel usage (therefore power) was the
same. So 2450 - 2500 was my normal cruise rpm with the Warp.

Hi Walter

Interesting comment. You're suggesting the Warp might be happier at a
bit higher rpm. I'm tempted to also try putting a bit of taper on the
tips but I'd like to see how it is on floats first.

If I can get a software issue sorted out I will have a Manifold pressure
display which will give me a better idea of what the engine is doing in
cruise. I've been spending way too much time trying to learn C and
understand the codewarrior compiler for microcontrollers. Might be
easier to just do some flying with a laptop plugged in I suppose. Mine
is pretty useless in daylight but I can set it up to record.

Yes, the reason I mentioned it was because of your comment of max 2600 rpm.
The Warp was a bit weird to me, in that it had a lower static take-off rpm
but higher cruise and climb rpm, yet seemed to hit the wall at 2650.
However, what I also remember, is that it really put out extra thrust at
that 2650 rpm, so that my max speed on floats was much higher than at just
2600. So much so, that it even beat my current Sensenich in top speed even
though it could only go 2650, while the Sensenich went up to 2720. So what
that told me, is that the Warp seemed to really grab bite at that higher rpm
for some reason. I know it doesn't make sense from a theory point of view,
but that is what I remember with my testing.

IIRC correctly, my Warp pitch was around 10 degrees, maybe 10.5, somewhere
in there, I think. I thought it was actually a pretty good prop with great
climb. Like I said, I had to run higher rpm at cruise, but my fuel flow was
still the same. My Lyc didn't mind, though, and ran very smooth at the
higher rpms.

Reminds me of this summer, too, on my trip when I would go up high. There
were a couple of legs where I stayed at WOT from take-off to final descent
(3+ hours), and I just used my fuel flow to tell me % power I was making at
various altitudes. It never saw below 2500 rpm until I was ready to land. I
might add that I could not do that a few years ago, because of my cooling,
but no problems now at all, in the hottest summer (35+C) conditions.

For what it's worth, I read on a yahoo group for subaru installations that the
warp-drive prop is most efficient at 16.5 degrees at 2650 rpm. Don't have
any confirmation of that fact, but found it interesting.

I am currently in the process of converting my Rebel from a Sube 2.2 with
2.17 to 1 Ross Aero redrive with 72" Warp Drive to Lyc 0-320 power. Flew
about 170 hours with the prop set at 14.5 degrees pitch. PS - I just ordered
a Catto 2-blade 74-52 prop for the Rebel. Will post an update once I get in
the air. Prop was $1295 with shipping and $390 for extension and bolt kit
from Vans.

thank you James
No doubt thin blades like to go faster than the thick and wide chords
but I think another huge factor is whether the blades are tapered when
we get up to those tip speeds.
Another 50 rpm on my prop has about the same tip speed effect as
changing the diameter by 1.5" I may play with this a bit in the warmer
weather but overall things are working so well that there is little
incentive for me to fiddle with things ;) I would like to get a cooler
source of combustion air to my engine but so far I haven't even bothered
to persue that.
