Of course low power is where your electronic ignition shines. You need
at least one plug to fire sooner to maintain decent fuel efficiency at
low power (or high altitude). Some guys with electronic ignition seem
to be happily cruising at much lower power than traditionally done with
the Lycomings...

In theory, wide open throttle and low rpm with a variable pitch prop
gives similar results but I don't think that is recommended with a
Lycoming. It worked well with the big radial engines.

And don't forget .... you can ALWAYS throttle back on a big engine & get the same economy of a smaller engine at the lower speed .... but there IS all that extra Oomph when you NEED it !!!

(and yes,... a wood prop is HEAPS lighter that a metal one (especially a constant speed one !)) ... and lightweight starter, alternator etc, etc
We run a B & C lightweight starter off the vac drive pad on the REAR of the engine - it's really light & 2 foot further back as well !

That, the sky tech starter, LSE ignition, P-MAG, wooden prop & lightweight battery has shaved over 40 Lbs off the firewall Fwd figure !
