[rebel-builders] Prince Props on Rebels

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:38 am

Hi Steve !

I'm surprised to hear that the 74 x 45 Prince was too fine
for your O-320 - must be a pretty peppy engine !!

The first Prince prop on Pierre's Rebel with the XP-360 , balanced,
polished, ported ... 196 hp. .... was a 76 x 44. That was a bit
too fine - revved over 3,000 easily !! Next prop was a 76 x 47 - just a
teeny bit too coarse - not able to turn 2,700 ...
Based on that, I would have thought a 76 x 44/45/46 would
be a good size for an O-320 of 150/160 hp. ...

I think your buddy will find he's 'WAY over propped !!!
Especially with a stock O-360 ..... unless, as you suggest, Prince
now uses different numbers ....

45' pitch which is too fine on 150 hp. Lonnie is to replace it here in the
next few months to possibly a 47". He says that the numbers for pitch are
not to be compared with say the numbers on a metal blade. A buddy, Gill, is
to receive a 76"dia. 56" pitch for his Elite with an 0-360 at 180 hp.
This is a big difference unless Lonnie has recently changed his method of
determining his evaluation of pitch. Anone there?

Hi Steve I have a 74/46 that I chose for best performance on floats. On
wheels it's just a little bit too fine. Great for 80' takeoff runs and
1600fpm climbs though. My engine is an ECI titan 160hp with electronic
ignition so it might be the right one for you depending if you're looking
for cruise or climb.

Hi Drew
This prop would be fine for floats but I'm on wheels and it will over rev in
climb if I let the airspeed get above 70 mph with full power. The best
performance that I would like to see would be red lining at about 130 mph.
I'm getting about 2550 static and 2400 would be better. I ran the aircraft
at a gross of 1800 lbs to Osh last year and even in the hot weather I was
still pulling 900-1100 climbs. I get about 106-108 mph cruise at 2400 and it
shud be better. Maybe the 47" would be OK. Thanks for the info.

Ya Bob
I don't know where the numbers are coming from. That's what I'm looking for
on wheels -not able to pull red line in level flight at max power but close
to it. That, from what I understand is the optimum pitch for cruise. It is
a rocket right now pulling 1800' in the climb solo and half tanks. Have only
flown once this fall in the cold temps and couldn't believe how it performed
compared to all the flying I did in June and July when it was warm. Like i
stated , I really don't know how the 56" pitch fits in here. Thanks for the
reply Bob
