So many choices Jim! Can't help one way or the other since budget and
personal preferences make it tough.

Just wanted to comment it's good to see that you're aircraft is only half of

Good'ay , I'm want to order my transponder this week and was wondering
if anyone has any recommendations to one that might be good value. I'm
leaning towards the XCOM 760 radio which has the round face so I
probably should go that route for the transponder as well - but your
opinions and cautions are welcome.

Jim,

You may want to consider the Becker ATC 4401, available with mode C or
mode S.

The only thing I know is that some in the past had a part that was only good
for a period of time (10 years I think). Now I think they are solid state
and that part is no more involve but I am not sure so you ask your dealer..
better before than after! Ask repair shop... usually most of the good we
buy need to be repair one day...

Hi Jim !

I've heard stories of some quality problems with the XCOM's -
think they're from Australia .... may be fixed now.

FWIW, I'd rather go with something a North American avionics shop
would want to work on .... for a good, cheap comm radio, it's
hard to beat the VAL-COM - were about $695, and available with
a complete wiring harness & jacks, ready to install.

Can't help with the transponders - will likely be the very last
thing I buy for the Rebel ! The newer ones are all solid state -
older ones have a very expensive tube --- good to avoid. I think
Tom I. just got a new Garmin xponder for his - think it has some
nifty features to tie into collision avoidance gadgets, and the
ability to output to an EFIS screen - things like the actual
altitude it is squawking .... useful !!!

I <might> consider one - AFTER I get an AV-MAP EKP colour
GPS with 7" display !!! MUCH higher on my 'want' list ... ;-)

Be good if you DO get one - YOU can be flight leader for all
border crossings on the Ramble this summer !! ;-)

I used the Garmin SL-40 com and their 320 transponder- Both came with full
install equipment except for the terminal crimper. I used the Ameri King
encoder and coupled it with the transponder for mode C. I didn't even
calibrate the altimeter and encode and installed them myself with little
effort. They only differ about 120'. Gill Tessier went to Osh with me last
summer and I think he has purchased the same for his elite. No need to say
what his impression was.

Thanks Bob, where do I find a Val-Com - I've done a google search and didn't find them. The price is certainly right.
And thanks to everyone else that offered an opinion - Wayne's right - lots of choices.

Jim,
I have two ValComm radios on my SR; both purchased several years ago and
with the mounting trays and wiring, so I'm sure the price has increased a
bit since then. The only problems I've had is that one of the unit's freq.
select. switches have become a bit stiff - probably some contact spray would
help. The other problem is that the original wiring set-up didn't provide
for a "keep alive" circuit, thus every time power was removed, the freq.
return to 121.900 & 121.700. Be sure to have a keep alive wire to retain
last selected freq. Another choice at a slightly higher price is ICOM -
same size and probably slightly better quality. Still another choice would
be the Garmin 250 with both GPS moving map and Comm.

Thanks Charlie, I have started looking at a Garmin Stack - it's more
than I had planned but certainly a nice tidy unit with transponder,
comm, and 396. I wasn't going to buy a GPS yet - maybe next year, but
it might be easier to do everything while I can still remove the panel
and dash. I now know the true meaning of 95% finished and 95% to go!!!!!!!!!

VAL Avionics on the web for the Val-Com: A good radio. The Garmin 320 (the

I've bought a few things Drew - visited twice and I found the prices not
bad and the bonus was that I didn't have to have them shipped from the
US. They basically convert their US catalog prices into Canadian dollars
and tack on our two lovely taxes.
Do allow a little time for them to get the order together but you can
buy 10 rivets or 1000, 2 screws or a 100 so it takes a little time to
put them all in little individual bags

Cheers

Heck I'd get a bad GPS before I got a transponder. I'd even rather have a

Has anyone here bought anything from ASS Toronto yet? I'm already hearing
rumors of poor service and higher prices.
