[rebel-builders] Rebel -Aileron hinge shims (spacers)

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:30 am

Congratulations Rob !

Sounds like a good choice !!! You'll be flying soon ! :-)

You already have enough spacers there - there's no problem
with cutting a slot down a 12 foot piece of 2 x 4, and sliding it
over the trailing edge of the wing skin, and bending it upward
slightly. This bends the whole edge at once, keeping out waves.

You can also get Teflon tape about 2" (or more) wide from
someplace that sells supplies to glider pilots. This tape goes
on top of the leading edge of the ailerons, reducing friction
and giving a well sealed joint. The top skin can slide on the
Teflon tape for a long time. Gliders have been doing this
for years - it's more efficient that a big gap there.

Are the ailerons covered already ?? The leading edge should
have a layer of polyester batting under the fabic, for cushioning,
and to prevent pinholes in the finish ...

Another alternative is, as Ken suggested, to set up a router
and trim 1/4" off the trailing edge of the skin - be very careful
if you try this - it must be straight !

Hello,

This is my first message to the group as a fully fledged Rebel builder! My
recent purchase of rebel kit 786 from a builder in New Jersey has me very
excited, even though the only thing I've done so far is stare at the project
in
my garage! Control surfaces and wings done 100%, fuselage about 40%.
Has Ontario mods too!

I'm slowly taking inventory of all the things that I still have questions
on.
One of these is that I was told by the owner that shims (or spacers) between
the aileron hinge brackets and the rear spar are a valid "fix" to prevent
aileron
contact with the wing. An archived post suggested that this might be due to
too acute an angle between the spar and the flange the wing skin sits on.
That post goes on to suggest that 3/16" is the widest spacer allowed per
MAM. I've sent a similar query to Murphy, but I thought I'd ask all of you
as
well?
