[rebel-builders] Access panels in fuel tanks-low adhesion
Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:27 am
Hello Dale
About 3 weeks ago I sealed up a few top plates on a 182 fuel bay with
the low adhesion sealant. I purchased it locally at Sacramento Sky
Ranch; they have a web sight www.sacskyranch.com or 1 916 421 7672.
Flamemaster Chem. Seal. CS 3330 Class B, AMS-3284 Type 1 CS 3330 CL B2
and has a 9 month shelf life, but will last a lot longer if kept
refrigerated. Also on the can is National Sealants & Lubricants, Inc
1-800-527-0011, <www.nationalsealants.com> the base material is pink in
color and the accelerator is black, the mix ends up as a dark grey with
a reddish tone.
I know other brands are available, PRC Desoto, and probably a few more
The plates I removed from the 182 were destroyed (out of shape) due to:
at the last install the regular sealant had been used and as you may
know it sticks really really good! In a past life when I was doing lots
of tank repairs, the low adhesion from Cessna (a dark pink) installed
plates were quite easy to remove with very little distortion of the
plate, and they usually were re-usable.
Someone in an earlier posting today mentioned using the correct AVEX
rivets, the Murphy numbers are RR-6402 & RR-6403. That is a 1/8" sealed
end rivet. You will want to put them wet, so dip each one in the
sealant and go for it. To slow down the cure of the mix place your
container in a second larger container with cold water or even with ice
in it. This will add hours to the pot life of tank sealant.

What is being used on the access panels in the fuel compartments of the
wings to seal them up? Is there a proseal that is used ? I need to get
mine
sealed up to fire engine up. I emailed MAM but didn't get a reply and
didn't
see anything in the manual.. Thanks Dale SR-033
