Puts a damper on things I'm sure. Valve extension smashed hole...or cylinder
over lean hole?

You guys that voted for a holed piston were 100% right. With oil dripping
out the exhaust and no compression on cylinder #5 the diagnosis was spot
on.

Just a little tip on removing aluminum from the cylinder without honing the
crap out of it which usually enlargens the bore. Wipe muratic acid on the
wall in the affected area as many times it takes remove the alum. It will
keep on reacting (foaming a small amount) as long as there in some on the
wall. Is this a steel sleeved/alum block engine? If it is an alum block
with a chrome plated bore, then maybe not try it. People use to bring
cylinders in to me when I worked in the shops years ago for oversizing after
ruining their jugs trying to remove the aluminum from the walls with a hone.
Hope the ring didn't roll and cause any major scoring.

[rebel-builders] Holed piston in my Chevy

It is a steel sleeved aluminum block. I assume the danger in trying it with
my block is getting the acid on parts of the block. The acid will react
with whatever aluminum it touches? If I decide to try it I must take
measures to ensure the acid stays only on the steel sleeve. I think I can
do that. The top of the connecting rod is covered with aluminum as well.
Should be OK getting it off of the rod with the acid?

Thanks for the great tip.

Valves are fine. The current theory is extremely high pressure due to
incorrect ignition timing although I don't know why only one cylinder was
damaged if that's the case. If anything, over-rich was still happening at
the time as well and is not involved.

It reacts very slowly so u won't have any problem controlling where it goes.
Make a bib at the bottom of the bore and make a swab with a piece of cloth
and a pair of needle nose plyers. What ever other steel parts it touches,
it will only clean it to the bare metal so it will rust very quickly. Do it
in small areas and when done, wash it with water and rust protect. I would
be careful about the top of the rod looking for any discoloration and if u
suspect any abnormal amount of heat has come in contact with the rod end, I
would replace keeping in mind the batch no. and the weight of the rod (for
ballance purposes). The alum on the rod end shouldn't be a hard as what's
on the cyl wall. May just be able to chip off with a little force but don't
mark the surfaces then clean with the acid if necessary. Really not a big
deal but takes some patience and time.
