The Murphy Builders Site

According to MAM"S site in the accessories there is a step available surely
they have instructions and photos for the installation.. Be worth a call to
Nancy to see. Lower gear and sitting flat I cured this problem on the Moose
after many more hours then I care to admit it took to make such a change.
But hopefully it's worth it in the end. Dale

The step you describe sounds like it'd work - might be a bit
slippery when wet & muddy though.

Anna & I were joking about steps for the Rebel ... one suggestion
was a piece of wood, 1" thick, with a rope on each end, tied to the
seat supports. Like a rope ladder, with one step - roll it up &
store on the floor next to the seat - toss it out when needed ! ;-)
(Ahoooy there, mateys !! ;-) )
(Maybe it could be removeable, and double as wheel chocks .. )

I think that your step may end up being too high. She'd have to put her
left foot on the step and duck to miss the wing. Plus she'd have to lean
back far enough to be able to swing her right leg between the fuselage and
her left leg. You'll need good handholds to go with the step. I'd do a
wooden mock up to try it out before drilling any holes. I think that a
stool about 6" high with a retrieval rope would work a lot better but I
don't start my ergonomics course for another 2 weeks :)

Actually, use a big coffee can with an eliptical cutout ... then you can bail
with it too! Flying on floats brings a whole new meaning to "bailing out".

Have a good trip Mike,, I had an offer to leave this morning for WY, I
passed it up a friend has a lodge out there.. I sent my paper work to the
FAA on the 13 of Oct, got it back today so now I need to progress to the
finished stage. I thought it would take longer to get it back now I have

Oddly enough I have been giving some thought to a step in the amphibs.
A removeable ladder is easy but can be forgotten. I think I like the
inset step idea although I haven't seen it done on the Murphy floats.

I've thought about it too Ken...but the 1800's aren't really that high to
step up onto....so I've never followed through.

I've thought about this too. If you made an extra false bulkhead and placed
the step so it picked up a false bulkhead on each side it should be strong
enough. Then the only problem would be making it waterproof. And don't let
my neighbourhood TC inspector see it or he'll want to know what the new
displacement is ;)

A flip down external foothold or mini step perhaps. Something that
folded up flush or faired. Maybe even arranged such that forward
airspeed or water speed would retract it? Magnetically held closed. It
might be possible to hinge something down near the forward bottom edge
of the float without much reinforcement.

Or on the front gear leg?

I should know better as I certainly know how much time airframe mods
consumed ;)
Maybe just keep a stepstool in the hangar for the ladies...

Dale,
Looks like the MAM step needs to be built into the floor structure during
construction. Nancy sent me the only instructions she had which were for a
2500 and it doesn't look like it will work for me. I'm probably going to
make some sort of step hung off the sill that will have to be removed before
closing the door.
