[rebel-builders] V8 carb stuff

Post by Mike Davis » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

Mike, have you considered an Edelbrock carb? They don't have a float, no
bowl for the fuel to sit in or leak out of.

I discovered something interesting while messing with my carb on the
workbench. If I tilt the carb towards the secondary float bowl fuel runs
out the primary fuel outlets in the carb throat. And if I tilt it towards
the primary float bowl fuel runs out the secondary outlets. It doesn't
take
much of a tilt to cause this to happen. If I lower the level in the float
bowl it takes more tilt to get the fuel to run out the ports. I wonder
what
this will mean when pitching up or down in flight. At least I found that
there is not enough tilt mounted on the airplane on the ground to cause
this
to happen. I was kinda hoping that it would since that would explain why
I
have had so much trouble with rich mixture and flooding. Now I still
don't
know why I have that problem although I'm learning some new things about
throttle and mixture settings that seem to make the engine start and run
better.

Mike depending on how close you are to having it leak when tilted it may be
close enough with the vaccum with the engine running to draw it out of the
bowl. You mentioned that you took the power valves out of the carb. What did
you do to replace where they were?? You or who ever did the carb work may
have created your problem.. Dale SR-033

If you remove the power valve, you PLUG up the hole! A carb that leaks
when "tilted" seems to warrant a closer look. You mean to say that (on a
vehicle) every time you accelerated or slowed the fuel would "leak" into the
ports? Unacceptable! What model carb are you running? The 500cfm two
barrel with the off-road mixture plate would seem ideal.

He doesn't mention how far it is tilted!! If tilted to far fuel will run out
over flow tubes (on a Holley 4 barrel) if they were modified and probably
even if they weren't. I guess if the power valves weren't needed they
wouldn't have put them on when they were designed (other then to make it
look pretty inside). I guess I need to go back to Carb School, have to park
the race car till then. . I do remember him mentioning having a stumble on
acceleration! Sorry Mike I can't be of anymore help, I'm sure others will
figure it out. Dale

Sorry for not answering your question Eric. You ask what Carb I run---
Willy's,, B & G, Baker, Stealth, K-B, Demon. What ever it takes to go fast.
Dirt for racing on Asphalt and Concretes is for getting there. Then you ask
where is there any place from PA to FL to Knoxville. Sorry for taking up
time and space on the builders site. I apologize and will refrain from it in
the future.. Dale

[rebel-builders] V8 carb stuff

Post by Mike Kimball » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:20 am

I sure have Mike. I went with the Holley because of the available
adjustable mixture plate. I may yet go with something else jetted for, say,
5000 feet, and leave it at that if I continue to have problems. The good
news is that I tinkered some more and the engine is running much better. I
lowered the fuel level in the secondary float bowl which sits higher than
the primary when mounted on the airplane on the ground. That along with
advancing the timing a bit helped. I am also going to change the springs
and advance stop in the distributer for a different advance curve. Right
now the centrifugal advance stops at 20 degrees at 4000 RPM. The new curve
will increase linearly from idle to 29 degrees at 4800 RPM. I'll have 8 to
10 degrees of initial advance. I'm hitting 1400+ degrees EGT at 4500 max
static RPM right now. I'm hoping that continuing the advance after 4000 RPM
will help keep that temp down, especially since it was pegged above 1600
degrees in flight. Keep the suggestions coming guys. I really appreciate
it. If the weather will just cooperate I might get one good flight in
before it just gets too cold.
