[rebel-builders] Rebel - Covering Flapperons

Hi Jim !

The only thing most folks miss is putting the layer of 1/4"
thick, or so, polyester batting over the leading edge of the flapperons.
It will be glued lightly in place, covering all of the sheet aluminum
leading edge. The fabric is stretched over the batting - it covers the
rivet heads and gives a nice smooth surface to the leading edge.
When the fabric shrinks, the batting will be compressed so it's
hardly noticeable, but it protects the rivet heads and allows for
smooth movement under the top wing skin. You can add Teflon tape
after final coats, for a tight, smooth seal.

If you just apply the fabric to the bare aluminum, you will get
pinholes in the finish. When the Polyfiber finishing coats dry, they
give off solvents. If you don't have the batting there so the gases
can escape easily, they bubble up through the fabric & leave pinholes !

You can buy rolls of 6 ft. wide polyester batting at most fabric
stores - it's not expensive.

I did a search for some feedback on covering the Rebel flapperons and
happily
found some references to a step or two that is not detailed in the murphy
instructions. My question is that, although quite proficient at covering
large
model wings, some of the terms relating to the full scale covering are new
to
me.

Has anyone on here detailed step by step the covering process? I'm not
worried about getting it done, just about forgetting something that I should
have done that was not explained in the build manual.

Is that the only area that you put the batting down, the leading edge?

Yes ! It covers ALL of the sheet aluminum at the front
of the ailerons, wrapping from bottom to top rear edge.

One more thing Bob. The 1/4" batting, is this the 4oz. stuff? In looking
around on the web, it seems to come in 4, 6, and 8 oz. thickness?
