The old springs are compression type which can break the arms on a Scott
3200 according to Wayne's note of a couple of years ago.

Hi Garry !

The 2151 Lightweight Spring kit is definitely NOT the one I have !
I cannot get the 06-00008 kit to display on the AS site right now -
don't know what the problem is -- so can't say if it's the good one.

My springs are about twice the diameter of the Lightweight ones,
and less than half the length .... They came directly from Scott,
a long time ago.

Scott were pretty definite that you must use their tension springs,
not the compression springs that worked so very well on the Murphy tailwheel.

Garry....let me find the bags in the morning. Is there a Princess Auto in
Calgary? They have a spring similar in size to what you need for a few buck
each that works well. The true Scott set comes with chains/quick clips etc
and the pair of springs has one spring with an extra 1/2 curl to avoid
harmonics. Not sure if I have the spring kit package still to get the # of
the one I have on my airplane that has served me very well also.

Drew,
The old springs are compression style. The cost of the arm is around
$200 if you break it like Howard did, so I don't want that risk.
Thanks

Bob,
Thanks for excluding the lightweight ones. That gets me closer.

Wayne,
There is a Princess Auto in Calgary. A good indication of the spring
type would be very helpful if you can find it. Thanks.

Dale,
Thanks. I imagine the Moose tailwheel you're referring to is a Murphy
design. I don't know but suspect it would be compression type springs
same as the Rebel so they would not do. Can you remember what style they
are?

Ian,
Thanks for your response. You should look in the archives at Wayne's
note dated 10/21/2004 on Scott tailwheels. If you are involved with any
soft ground or are inclined to punch the rudder hard at times, you could
be in for some difficulty with Murphy's springs on a 3200.

Post by Garry Wright » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:13 am

Ian,

With all the experience on the list we haven't yet figured out which
spring is the right spring. I checked a Citabria today and it had a pair
of matched springs, 1" diameter, 31 turns on each, no half turn, no
links or anything. I did not measure but it appeared to be about 6-7"
long. The darned thing seemed to fit okay and it was a strictly tension
spring. I am going to phone ACS tomorrow to see if I can confirm the
correct one that way. In any event, I'm sure the important points are no
possibility of bottoming as in a compression spring and roughly the
right spring constant. BTW, where are you in Oz?
