Ben,

I buy all my scrap aluminum from Air Parts http://www.airpartsinc.com/

I don't know what shipping runs as they are local for me, they are
nice people to deal with and more than willing to work with you in
any way they can.

"oversize" charge. I called them this morning to see how damaging that

$35).

I hadn't thought 2x4 foot sheet should make oversize status. Anyone know
of an easier way for getting this sort of thing in N. California?

I would suggest you go on the internet and see if there is a Metals
Supermarket anywhere close. They are a franchise operation that
specializes in small orders. I haven't bought sheet but if the store
here in Cincinnati doesn't have what you need they have a network they
use to find it for you.

Hi Ben !

I can see oversize charges if its flat, but surely you can get
them to ROLL it - then it would only be 2 ft. x about 6" ...

Another possibility is to get it cut to 2 x 2 or so, if that
size is large enough for you to use.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
I'm awaiting a call back from Metals SuperMarket for quote. Although they
didn't have .020, they are relatively close by, and might work out better
in general for me than ACS. Airparts Inc has slightly higher prices but
shows willing to roll depending on thickness and minimum of 6 ft length.
Just a bit more shopping to figure out best option.

Hi Ben !

Just one caution - for all - some of these places sell "roofing grade"
aluminum - not really good for aircraft use ! Also, many 'aircraft'
suppliers only sell 2024 alloy aluminum, as used on most certified aircraft -
what you want for the Rebel is 6061-T6 aluminum, to match the rest of
the airplane !

You <can> use 2024, but be sure to use lots of epoxy primer on it,
partly because it corrodes much faster than 6061-T6, and partly because
that corrosion will be accelerated if it is in contact with a dis-similar
metal - that is, 6061-T6 !! Generally, 2024 alloys are more expensive than
6061-T6, as well ....

Hey Bob,
Yep, I'm picky about what I'm putting in this thing. There is a local
metals scrap place that would be soo easy, but none of the stuff is marked
as to what alloy which probbably means it is 3003. Then another local
place that will easily provide whatever I want, but at a cost closer to
gold. :) BTW, this little bit of shopping is for a couple inside corner
wraps I need to re-do and the Fus30 doubler. I may just end up buying from
MAM as keeping business going there is good in general.

When I ordered 12 feet of 0.025 from ACS a while ago I found out that they
will roll sheets up to 0.032. If you are ordering sheets of aluminum I
would also recommend getting more than you need. As you have discovered,
shipping hits you pretty hard but it doesn't cost much more to ship 12 feet
than it does to ship 6 feet. The roll ends up about the same size either
way. I figured I'd need 8 feet for what I was going to do and all 12 feet
are pretty much gone now.

Hi guys,
I ended up going with AC Spruce on this after all. Specific request by phone
to roll the pieces (4 foot long x 2ft .032 and .020) was granted. My shipping
cost went down from ~$35+ to $15. Metalsuppliers.com didn't have 020, but
otherwise they woulda been fine and not need coaxing to roll for shipping.
