Would Murphy provide a documentation configuration control system?
It could be as simple as four columns of data posted on the Murphy web
site
, 1)airplane model, 2)changed page number, 3)the date page error was
found,
and 4)the date manual or drawing was updated. This data posted on the
web
could give us builders a check to see if there are changes coming and
could
stop work if necessary. When the manual is up dated Murphy could post
the
change page(s) on the web. We can go from there.

Great idea. For years Van's has published their drawing changes and minor
manual revisions and clarifications as a regular part of their bi-monthly
newsletter for RV builders and accomplished the same purpose. The web makes
that process quick and inexpensive. I believe at one time Murphy was
thinking of doing this, but I haven't heard the latest status. It looks
like they are still working at getting the builder support page back up
after the unfortunate web server crash.

This updating of manuals and then the builders has always been a wonderful
idea to me. As I completed each section of my plane I completely rewrote
that
section of the manual and forwarded soft copies to Murphy. After doing this
for 4 or 5 sections and never even getting an acknowledgement let alone an
update from Murphy I became very discouraged and stopped. A complete and
current online manual at the Murphy site should certainly be doable and
welcomed by me. I suspect they have concerns regarding the use of more
current manuals to some older kits but I think each builder should maintain
the integrity of his kit and just use the current manual as a guide. This
would certainly have helped me in the area of the Rebel wing. I found the
wet
tank section (an add on) very confusing, especially in the order to do
things. Even the current Elite manual still has some confusion around the
riveting of wet tank skins to main wing skins as I found out when they faxed
me a section to try and clear up some of the confusion in my older manual.
Now that I've vented my spleen ..YES you have my vote for an online
manual.

I have to add another vote for some type of manual config. control
documentation.

I would like to add another "little" suggestion, that would help address
Wrays concern about applicability of manual updates to hardware in the
field. The manual upgrades could reference, by S/N, which version of
the manual applies to the actual kit you have. Less confusion and
trying to figure out why the manual doesn't match the parts you have in
front of you.

Hi Wray,
A builder or group of RV builders made a comprehensive manual that probably
could replace the manual that Van's supplied. It was available to all on
the web for free. It had a lot of the best tips and techniques worked out by
builders over the years. Van's had nothing do with it. I guess there is
nothing preventing this users group from doing the same thing, especially
since you already have a 4 to 5 section start. One thing we could do is
create a set of tip sheets associated with each chapter to supplement the
manuals, collecting various successful approaches. Maybe Mike could set an
area up like he did for the photos.
