Can any one recommend a manufacture and supplier of the Expoxy Chromate two
part primers in the Toronto Area. Is any one using another non Chromate
Primer and having success.

Randy, Stick with the Polyfiber Epoxy Chromate as comes with the kit.
Available at the AERO MART just off Dixie rd. Address is 6790 Davand Drive
Unit # 7. Phone 905-565-0737, fax-0738. Always call ahead to make sure
someone is there! Directions: North on Dixie (above the 401), Turn left onto
Mid Way Blvd (first street after crossing Courtney Park Dr.) Turn right at
first corner onto Davand Drive and 6790 is about 5 buildings up on the left
side. Unit # 7 is on the right side of the complex. They were still there
last year and move around a bit. No advertizing or anything and only stay in
business by word of mouth!! Prettty stupid when you consider they have both
the polyfiber and superflite distributorships for Ontario!!!

You might ask the price before you go as well. I did awhile ago and was shocked.
It may well convince you to order from Spruce even if it takes a week.

There are other sources in the Toronto area if you later want a couple of
gallons of epoxy chromate for spraying the whole aircraft. I have used Starpoxy
successfully for that purpose. I'm told it is used by DeHavilland/Boeing/now
Bombardier. Tristar Coatings, 18 Cadetta Rd, Brampton.

You never cease to amaze me. Is there anything about airplane construction in
CANADA you don't have a line on. Now have you or do you know of anybody that
has used PPG Wash Primer DX1791- DX1792. It's supposed to be easier and safer
than epoxy chromate and extremely durable. Morry Hummel recommended it and a
couple of RV guys I met liked it a lot.

Hello All,

There is a post from Peter and Monica on the archives regarding the fact
that they have Epoxy Chromate shipped from A/C Spruce to UPS in Buffalo!
Then they drive across the border to pick it up. Sounds like a good excuse
to take the wife out for a drive and I hope dinner, but Peter you can't tell
me this would allow the final price of a quart or two to be cheaper than
AeroMart. And yes I agree AEROMART is way overpriced, but it is the only
game in the province! I suspect Peter has done this (UPS Buffalo) with a
large shipment of parts and not just the chromate, or else there is a real
good restaurant just off the QEW somewhere!!

Best Regards,

Phil,
Trust me, there is a lot that I still need to learn (or don't want to know)
about airplane construction in Canada!!! But thanks for the compliment
anyway!

PPG????? My airplane is painted with PPG-2 Part Epoxy Urethane and it is
always shinny, even when covered in dirt and even now with a mist of yellow
Tremclad over spray on the whole plane. (Don't ask how it got there, but
I'll clean it off some day!) I don't remember exactly what Primer went on it
(and the paint shop next door to my plant is now gone), but the PPG system
did have it's own epoxy primer ( a little duller green than the polyfiber).
The paint coats must all be applied within 72 hours of priming, or you must
sand the primer or any colours you are covering, or they will not bond. This
was a difficult time frame on a 4 colour "dart" style paint scheme, even
with 4 of us working on the paint job (but the compliments I get on the
plane make it all worth it)!

As most of the better paint shops (automotive) use the PPG system, I suggest
that one of your local body shops could point you to a shop that uses PPG,
or sell/order you some of the primer you are looking for!!!!

Got to get back to Bobs blonde jokes, sorry!

Blue skies,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Terry, must be a very recent "stupid" move on Murphy's part, as I don't
believe Bob P. even knows they have stopped supplying the chromate! I m
currently helping with a set of SR wings and the chromate was supplied with
the wing kit (1 year ago), although he did not get another can with the
fuselage kit about 6 months ago and was told that the one can was all you
need! YAH RIGHT!!!! Need almost 2 cans (rebel) for joining all items and
dipping all rivets, much more if you start covering the entire skins!
Definitely need even more for the SR2500!!! So now you have finally received
your kit after waiting months, and can't assemble anything until you find a
source for epoxy chromate! Disappointing I'm sure!!!!

They have probably stopped supplying the chromate because people may have
been complaining that they needed more and since it was supposed to be
supplied with the kit, it should be free! So if you don't supply any, you
are not suggesting an amount required, so no one can complain!!!!!!??????

It's still a great airplane with or without the chromate so keep at it, it's
worth it in the end!!!!!!

Okay Dave, I will tell you! That yellow Tremclad over spray came from a
customer painting some items in my hanger, with BOTH bi-fold doors open to
get more light on the subject! Of course with the doors open on both ends of
the hanger, everything "down wind" got covered in over spray!!!! Real fun
stuff to get off a windshield!! And I have been assured, that it won't
happen again!!!!!

Epoxy Chromate Primers

Phil&Lisa

On Elite #583 we are using what is probably the Dupont equivalent to the PPG
product, Corlar filling wash primer. This is available in chromate bearing
(820R) and non-chromate formulation (810R), we are using the chromate version.
When you use the chromate version they say you do NOT need to apply a chromic
conversion treatment (Alodyne/Iridite). This material is used in local aircraft
refinishing and float manufacturing facilities. I suppose they have a good
handle on corrosion issues in this area due to the proximity of the salty
Atlantic Ocean.......

We contacted the Dupont Tech center to get advice on this. It is recommended to
follow the Corlar with a high solids urethane primer 1020R (Ochre) or 1044R
(Gray), and a Dupont topcoat like Imron.

Dupont is clear on their direction to use a paint "system" from ONE manufacturer
to avoid incompatibility. (Ummm and stay away from that tremclad ;< )

These are available at your local UAP auto body supply jobber - off the shelf.

Application of all these products is best done with a fresh air supply to the
painter since these days just about every paint you will encounter will have very
nasty chemicals like isocyanates (or chromate in typical zinc chromate) in them.
Normal charcoal etc. masks are NOT adequate for these paints. Your fresh air
system does not need to be expensive, ours is just a shop vac located in a room
outside the painting area and an old furnace blower which exhausts the paint
fumes and maintains the shop at a pressure lower than ambient. This ensures that
fumes won't enter the house attached to the workshop (that is a description of
priorities isn't it!). You will need a hood/visor to pump the air into, we made
one from a Canadian Tire clear visor and some fabric.

Hope all this is useful,

Dave R.

Wayne,

A portion of the official communique from Murphy states, "Due to resent
changes in Federal Transport Regulations it has be come unfeasible for us
to send any of these Chemicals with your Kit." The letter is marked
"Important Notice: Re.: Proseal, Zinc Chromate Primer, Fiberglass Resin,
Tubeseal and Meta-sol (cleaning solvent)."

I ordered some MetaSol and epoxy primer from Aircraft Spruce and had to
pay UPS a hazardous material shipping fee for shipping a quart of each.
Maybe Murphy's trucking company won't carry the materials or wants too
much extra to carry hazardous materials.

The folks at Aero Mart are there as Wayne accurately mentioned. They are
very nice & helpful folks. However, the price of their Polyfibre products
are really high. If you have any way of getting the material through a
friend in the US, it will save you bundles. Unfortunately, this material
cannot be shipped to Canada by normal methods as it is considered hazardous.
Hence you cannot order from Aircraft Spruce or Wicks. I used to pick up my
requirements on my annual Oshkosh trek. I was going to buy a quart of white
epoxy primer from Aero Mart but the cost was about $114 plus tax. Pretty
scary.

Can any one recommend a manufacture and supplier of the Expoxy Chromate two
part primers in the Toronto Area. Is any one using another non Chromate
Primer and having success.

Epoxy Chromate Primers

Hi Ken & Randy

That does remind me, the Glastar folks near where Phil Stubley finished up
his Rebel, were buying a CIL product out of Kitchener for the same purposes.
They thinned and sprayed interior surfaces. I begged/borrowed some from
then as the price was decent and did my forward inner flows with it.

Randy

You might ask the price before you go as well. I did awhile ago and was
shocked.
It may well convince you to order from Spruce even if it takes a week.

There are other sources in the Toronto area if you later want a couple of
gallons of epoxy chromate for spraying the whole aircraft. I have used
Starpoxy
successfully for that purpose. I'm told it is used by DeHavilland/Boeing/now
Bombardier. Tristar Coatings, 18 Cadetta Rd, Brampton.

Wayne,

Murphy doesn't supply primer anymore with the kit. They advise the
builder to find a source of supply.
