[rebel-builders] Rebel Rocket

Good to hear about another Rebel in the air. Congrats to Dick, and if you,
Steve, were giving him any advice with the build, I am sure it will be
another fast one, too, and with that 6 cyl 0360. Any info on the empty
weight and where the c of g ended up?

On Thursday August 3 Dick Wanderwicken flew his rebel N706DV on it's 41 min
maiden flight from Arlington airport in Wash State. During this flight the
upper end of the flight envelope was explored along with a rough calibration
of the pitot static system and checking of the engine gages for proper
operation. It was found that the engine CHT and oil temp were on the cool
side ( 270 to 300 deg CHT 160 deg oil temp ) with the cowl flap in the open
position. The take off and landing was text book. Post flight inspection
found a couple of small fuel leaks under the cowl, a loose fairing on the
wing strut, and a slight adjustment to the right flappron trim tab.
Dick was kind enough to let me make the second flight on friday. I
briefly explored the low end of the flight envelope through stall buffet (
45 mph ias ) then I spent the rest of the flight a 25 " mp @ 2500 rpm to
break in the rings. This airplane is one of the nicest Rebels that I have
had the pleasure to fly. The power and smoothness of the 6 cyl Continental
IO 360 is something we all dream about. With the power set at 22"mp @ 2200
rpm the airplane cruises at 125 mph and is very quite and smooth.

Great work Dick.

Thanks for the flight.

Hi Walter
As I recall his empty CG was 10.5" and his empty weight is around 100 lbs heavier than my Rebel on wheels which would make it around 950 to 960 lbs. Dicks airplane is really striped, No paint, No interior, Basic VFR, and one radio. His IO 360 with all of its lite Wt accessories only weights 50 lbs more than my IO 240.

After flying his airplane I am kind of down in the dumps, as it took me one and one half years of aerodynamic clean up work to get my rebel to cruise at 140 mph at 75 percent power. Dick's Rebel at 140 mph plus is still climbing at better than 500 FPM at 25" SQ.

One thing however, he burns a lot more fuel.

Congrads Dick! Now you must get those long range tanks installed so you can
make your trip north!

You gotta be very happy with the "Rebel Rocket". Nice work indeed!

I may be at AWO (Arlington, Washington) in the near future with camera in
hand.

Have fun.

Well, I shouldn't be surprised. If you had anything to do with it, it will
be fast, light, and c of g in line, too. Should be a rocket on floats, too,
with that engine.

Nice plane Dick/Steve. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to visit more over Arlington week. I feel bad I didn't spend more time getting acquainted. I would have liked to check the Rebel out more closely as well. I'm sure you will back next year.
