It should work Mike Zenith has been doing it that way for years.

I don't like the poor quality of the MAM fiberglass wing tips that I have.
I made a design, and 1/2 scale model of some Hoerner style wing tips thst
I would make out of aluminum. They look good, are relatively easy to make,
have a place for nav lights and probably have less drag. Am I really off
on a tangent here, or has somebody else done anything like this?

Mike.

Everyone who has Dave's aftermarket fibreglass hoerner tips seems to
like them.

Hi Mike: I am surprised at the number of guys that have said the same thing
about the MAM wing tips. In defence of same, the tips I got with Rebel 652
(my first one) where great. The tips that came with Rebel 725 (actually two
sets) where both great. Now I have purchased Rebel kit 192 and the tips with
it (1993) are also real nice. That's four sets I have seen all being O.K. If
there are any small blemishes or marks, I use a Canadian Tire (aircraft
division of coarse) bondo light weight body filler which sticks to anything
, sands real nice and after painting, wouldn't know it was there. But in
answer to your question, I made tips like your talking out of aluminium for
a Zenair 701 rebuild project. Actually my 1st aircraft, and they worked very
well. Just look at the write up on Zenairs web site. If the Rebel tips I got
had been bad, I was going to do the same thing. Best regards - Bob J Rebel

It would be interesting to see a set of plans of how the Zenith tips are
fabricated. I have a friend who built a 601XL. I might bug him for a peek.

I spent 4 days filling voids in the gelcoat and gave up with a coat of
primer when I decided not to paint this year.

Hi Mike !

If, by Hoerner-style wing tips, you mean the aluminum tips like
Zenair uses - that is, just a sloped bottom surface, I wouldn't bother.

I have a set in the basement I'd happily sell - Wayne made them for
my Rebel because he doesn't like fiberglass (I can relate !). When I replaced
them with Dave Fife's scalloped-out, compound-curved underside,
'real' Hoerner tips, my takeoff distance decreased over 20 %, and the
rate of climb went up 100 FPM, and the low speed handling improved
dramatically ! Best 'bang for the buck' in performance additions !

Heck those are good ones I spent that much time on my rudder tip.

Mike:

I think that piece of plywood is just a temporary shim to assure
separation.

The trouble I had with my standard tips was that the were not aligned
with the ailerons at any degree of relex, let alone the required 5*. I
had to cut them at the aileron hinge line and re-glass them in the right
position. I also found that the unsupported part in line with the wing
trailing edge was wavy, and had to glass in a reinforcing web to fix
that.

Like Ralph, I riveted the tips on, but left large access holes inboard
of the tip rib and behind the spar to get at the strobe power supply.
