The Murphy Builders Site

I was told recently that if you mix them they will eventually separate, e.g.
like water and gas separate. Anyone know if that's the case?

I can't cite any scientific proof but I've done it for years with no
problems. I prefer to run mogas but it's hard to find when you're
traveling.

Dave, Ted,

No problem mixing mo and avgas. Been doing it for years and In often will put avgas in the mogas just to make it more stable if I know it is going to sit around a while, like over the winter months. Mogas does not last more than 6 months... then it goes down hill fast.

i was told the same thing, by several people in the oil business,
so always ran 100LL in one tank, and mogas in the other. This made
it easy to be sure the engine was getting 100 LL for takeoff &
climb - and mogas on cruise.

I have mixed them sometimes with no apparent ill affects, but
it seems reasonable that, given the considerable chemical & physical
differences, you aren't going to get a consistent mixture going
to the engine. Given the higher alcohol content in mogas these
days, it certainly is likely to hide more water !

Mogas has changed drastically in Canada in the last few years -
10 years ago, I could leave a tank full for 5 months in winter,
and still use it. A couple of years ago, I discovered that
mogas that was only 2 months old would not even start the 912 !
The formulation is changed considerably to suit the seasons,
and winter mogas flashes off the good stuff quickly in spring !

I don't see why a homogenous fuel to the engine would matter even in the
unlikely event that the fuel did not perfectly mix? Both fuels will have
to have sufficient octane and both are presumably certified or STC'd for
the engine. As long as some lead goes in every few hours, its
lubrication effect on the valve seat will be there from what I
understand. It would make a difference in EGT's but don't see why that
would be a problem either. I favour running at least 75% mogas to reduce
maintanance costs regardless of the fuel cost and I wouldn't hesitate to
mix them. Can one avoid mixing them for takeoff in a Rebel anyway with
the recommendation that both fuel tanks be on for takeoff?

Interestingly, the circa 1992 fuel caps on my Rebel swell up too much to
reinstall after getting wetted with mogas. Let them dry and they shrink
back to normal size. Another detail that took me awhile to understand is
that I can store mogas in a sealed plastic container sitting on the
ground for a long time (more than 6 months) just fine. It doesn't store
well in large unsealed metal tanks (such as wings) with lots of daily
temperature changes.

Can't recall where I read it, but I believe mixing a little 100 avgas into
mogas was/is the recommended solution for low compression engines such as
Continental 0200 (and perhaps that includes Lyc 0235?). EAA has a bunch
of reading on mogas issues. I'm still a little stumped about the ethanol
issue as I believe anyone that's worth suing will say no, can't use ethanol
mogas, but I'm guessing it is done. Ethanol is spreading very fast.
