[rebel-builders] Rebel-bungey rings

Hi Rod !

You must have had an old manual - we've been making the bolts
parallel (both are fore & aft) for years -- it's a lot easier to
install bungees, and fairings are smaller. Your 8 1/2" centers
sounds a bit larger than standard - but no worries mate ! :-)

The old setup did match yours, which is similar to Cubs, etc.
You should have no problem using the 9044 rings - other than being a
bit more of a challenge to install. Put the top over the top bolt,
then use a nylon ratchet tie-down strap hooked at the bottom of
the gear tube to pull the bungee down, pop it over the bottom bolt
using a large screwdriver as a pry bar. The partial twist will
make it a bit tighter, but will help a bit with damping bounces.

Your 'double length' method should work too, if there's
enough tension -- or you could just use another 9044. :-)
We usually end up with 2 on the front and 2 on the back, with
one extra one on top, in the groove between the first 2,
for heavier Rebels.

The bolts should be OK if you use the Delrin tubes, tightened
between the tube & penny washers - they effectively double the
bolt diameter - AND provide a larger, more slippery surface
for the bungees --- considerably better than just a bolt !!
Might be best to cut the ends of the Delrin to fit the gear
leg tube (fishmouth)....

G,day chaps,
Has anybody any info on the following Q,s
My Rebel has the bolts 5.16" facing E .W and N. S . EW on LG27 and NS on
LG 29 [ my book] others LG43 .
Is it possable to still use 9044 [ 4 1\2 ] rings ,as they would have a twist
on them.
Could I us e double the length and hook onto south end of bolt ,up over EW
then back onto north end of bolt.
Hope you can understand this .
Also are the sizes of the rings ok.
Bolts are 5.16" do they need to be inc.to 3\8.
Will be using delrin rod over bolts also.
Distance between bolts centre to centre is 8 1\2 ".

[rebel-builders] Rebel-bungey rings

Well I would agree that spacers would add a lot of strength if the
bolts were going through solid round rods instead of hollow aluminum
tubes. I agree that the
spacers are a good idea but I don't think they add much strength in this
particular case unless they are indeed fishmouthed. Otherwise when the
bolts start to flex or bend, the spacers will just push in or dent the
hollow tube. I would highly recommend fishmouthing if using AN5 bolts.
FWIW I'd consider replacing the bolts with AN6 if that is what the
current kits are shipping with.

One possible complication with bolts that are not parallel and 9044
rings is that I think you'd have to use exactly four rings to keep the
strut from twisting. No more, no less.

Also note that the safety cable installation was changed a couple of
times. Originally I believe it was one 3/32 cable. Then it was a loop
of 3/32 cable. Based on an analysis of something breaking before the
bungees are fully stretched my personal recommendation would be - If
putting the safey cable inside the tubes I would recommend a loop of 1/8
cable. If using one external cable, I'd recommend a 3/16 cable.
