Vertical Card Compass

If you are in the U.S. it will most likly need tick marks for all the
degrees. It must be swing and adjustable. Check with your local EAA
technical counslor and your FAA inspector. The Hamilton compass are great
with very little adjustment and as acurate as a gyro.

Well thanks so much for all your responses regarding my questions on
instruments. I feel a little more informed now while looking through the
different catalogs. I won't be installing gyro instruments for quite some
time,
just want to keep it simple and relatively cheap. I did check on those
electronic compasses in Radio Shack, they look great ... but they only give
readings in 5 degree increments.( if that really matters) I sure like the
look
of that 'vertical card compass' though, anyone have experience with this
type?
Thanks Again,
Clay

Vertical Card Compass

Apparently the Radio Shack compasses are legal here - some are using them.
They just extrapolate the degrees in between the marks. This type of compass
was the only solution for one homebuilt with steel tubes right near the
compass - couldn't correct a regular compass !!

I have a Hamilton vertical card compass - don't think they're worth
the price !! Still vibrates, and I hear the bearings go quickly, and are
expensive to replace... With GPS, compass is a lot less important than
a few years ago !

Any reasonably accurate "fixed" compass is legal in a homebuilt (in Canada),
as long as you "swing" it annually so you can fill out a deviation card to
state how far off "reality" each 30 degrees of heading is!!!!
