Just got back from Arlington last night. It was great to finally meet some
of the group in person -- Steve, Dick, Terry, Garry, Bruce, Walter -- who'd
I forget? Arlington is just the right size to see a bunch of Rebels. Very
helpful and inspiring to see your planes and bend your ears -- thanks all.

Walter, I learned from Mattituck that they'll ship an engine from NY to
west coast for only ~ 250 USD, so if those VGs don't completely solve your
quest for higher altitude ops, any of the big name engine places are in the
same price ballpark. I think I did some reality checking after being so
impressed with the Superior forum. (BTW, Superior now also offers an
XP-320 ...but it is only 8lbs less and about $800 less than an XP-360.)
One of the issues for me is $20k for a fabulous new engine, but then having
to run it pretty much all out during break-in, versus spending half that
for a mid-time engine that will take me a long time to use up, and being
free to test fly a brand new plane at any speed/power settings.

Yes. It was great meeting you and swapping stories with Steve and Dick. I am
sorry to have missed Garry, Bruce, Al Brian and Walter! I was looking for them
at the Rebel parking, but they never showed. Boo-hoo. All of the Rebels looked
very nice indeed! Dick's new 210 Super Duper Rebel Rocket was a real surprise.
I had visited Dicks' project several months ago and guesstimated 6 months to
finish. A BIG surprise to me that the Rebel Rocket is waiting for DAR signoff
and is virtually ready to go! That was a fast build! He did a beautiful job
and great workmanship. I know that Steve has mentioned some ideas for making
his Rebel go faster. I am sure those mods will be accomplished in short order
too. Brian's Rebel got some paint and it looks very nice indeed.

I was going to purchase a new XP-360 for my Rebel, but ran across a half
runout Lycoming O320 E2D (160 HP mod). I know the owner (it was removed from
an RV-6), how he treats his engines and the history of it . . .
needless-to-say, I couldn't pass it up. It will need a lightweight alternator,
B&C starter and B&C oil filter adapter. Now all I have to do is . . . "Get
her done". Right Roger?

I would also like to echo Ben's message to Ken and congratulate him on a great
job! Now the fun begins. Good luck and happy flying.

I was there on Sat and Sun morning and then Bruce and I headed back up to
Langley. Yes, nice job on Brian's paint job there.

Bruce and I had a good day today with a flight to Chatterbox Falls on
Princess Louisiana Inlet. Do a google if you want to see where we were. It
was quite spectacular in several ways. Weather was good, except for some
very strong winds that were swirling around in the inlet where we had to
land. At one point Bruce and I were on opposite sides of the canyon, maybe
1/4 a mile apart, and I was going down 1500 fpm full throttle, while he was
climbing 1500 fpm while throttling down. Anyway, we managed to get down and
land safely and take off, although even that was interesting, as the wind
tried to twist us sideways after lift-off. Beautiful place, though, and we
enjoyed a nice lunch in the sunshine on the beach near the falls. I think
both of us gained some good experience on our Rebels, which is always good
for the confidence.

Still no verdict on the VGs, as with the wind, it wasn't a question of
getting off fast, but getting enough altitude quickly after lift off to
avoid getting one float slammed down again into the water.
