gascolator mounting

Hello,
Does anyone have comments on the gascolator bracket that MAC shows in
the O-320 installation instructions. It doesn't seem to hold the
gascolator on with anything but the pipe threaded connection thru the
firewall and seems as though the gascolator will just flop around in the
mounting bracket. The large hole that they show( 2 1/8 diameter ) merely
allows the bowl to fit thru for removal. The outer diameter of the
bracket ( 2 3/4 dia ) will not allow the bail wire to fully seat into
the retaining holes. I'm sure that I can make it work but this loose
mounting does not look too reliable to me. Maybe I'm missing something
here?

Thanks,
Rick D.

Rick, I did my first one with the MAM thing bracket and you are right, only
the pipe thread coming though the firewall holds it in place! Very hard to
safety wire the bail also! Howard's I welded brackets to the top casting of
the gascolator to bolt to firewall. Worked beautiful, but a damn good thing
I actually welded the aluminum properly (for the first time) with the TIG
welder. I wouldn't try it again, now that I now the gascolator sells for
over $60 U.S. All the rest have been done with the matching stainless steel
gascolator bracket that is available from Aircraft Spruce for the ACS
gascolator supplied by MAM. Part number is P/N 10371, price was $9.40 U.S. I
don't know why they don't include this with the gascolator in the engine
mount kit! (Well I do, it costs $7.50 when bulk purchased and that would add
to the final cost of the kit!)

gascolator mounting

Hi Rick

I also have the 0320 with the gascolator that you mentioned. I bought the
installation kit from Murphy but got the gascolator from Aircraft Spruce
with the appropriate bracket. I was very unimpressed with the bracket. It
would be difficult to get the bail off of the bracket which is required so
that you can inspect the gascolator. I thought the result would make for a
substandard installation so I rejected the lot. I probably am too fussy,
but, the entire locking mechanism relied upon the spring tension of the bail
which in turn pinned the gascolator bowl to the top unit. I also could not
find a good adaptor to come thourgh the firewall without extra fittings
unless you just drilled a hole through the firewall & did not use a bulkhead
style fitting. Just not good overall practice.

As a result, I bought an Andair gascolator which has a much larger screen
and a very superior locking mechanism etc. Quality wise you cannot even
compare the two as the Andair is so superior in all respects. The flat
gasket itself on the Aircraft Spruce unit itself was substandard to say the
least. Of course the Andair is twice the price. However, I feel much
better knowing that their is no chance of the bowl dislodging itself in
flight & dropping onto the nearby exhaust pipes. Also, with the Andair
unit, you can inspect it with ease etc.

Peace of mind at twice the price.

My thoughts anyway.

gascolator mounting

Rebel builders,
Thanks to all who replied so soon. This ACS gascolator has not been one of
my favorite parts. It looks like it was taken off of a lawn mower. There are a
lot of these in use and I have not heard of any problems with them. While at
Oshkosh '99 I stopped by the Andair booth and checked out their gascolators.
They are first class units and I am considering getting one even though they are
fairly expensive. I also do not have the information on how they are mounted so
I will have to get that info before I proceed. I'll probably design a bracket
that will have common mounting holes so that I may use either. I think that
keeping the gasoline contained in a well designed and mounted gascolator is
quite important and this is no place to be cutting corners. Aircraft Spruce and
Specialty sells them, however, their catalog only lists the 1/4" pipe thread
model. I was advised by the gentleman from Andair to use the 3/8 " pipe model
for the O-320. The andair part number is GAS375. I found the Andair brochure
that I picked up and it lists several sources; Vans Aircraft Inc. (RV's) Phone #
(503) 647-2311;
Kit Components Inc (Lancair's) (541) 923-2244; and 5051 Drive Systems (S-51's)
Rod Bower e-mail N180RB@aol.com

Chief Aircraft 1-800-447-3408
Wicks Aircraft 1-800-221-9425

Thanks to all who highlighted the control rod problem (no lock nut, allowing a
working thread, in aluminum no less!) as you may have saved some lives with your
alert. I have not hooked up this area yet and I would hope that I would not
accept the condition as described. I will investigate some of the offered
solutions when I get there. Did the factory really advise that this was O.K.
???????

All comments welcomed.

Bye for now,
Rick D.

Hi Doug

You can buy the Andair unit at Aircraft Spruce but I bought my unit at
Van's. They are great people to deal with. You should get their catalogue
as they have a very good selection of excellent hardware with proven
homebuilder use. Good prices, not bargains, but excellent stuff. I also
bought my baffle kit from them. The kit was outstanding with instructions
you could not believe. The Andair price was slightly cheaper than Aircraft
Spruce.

Happy building - It is a great airplane!

gascolator mounting

HI There

With the Andair unit, you do not need a special bracket. It is incorporate
into the body of the unit & you have two options on how you can mount the
unit. I also bought the 3/8" unit obviously as we are using 3/8" tubing on
the Rebel. The 3/8" compression fittings are built right into the unit so
all you need is a nut & ferrule to attach tubing to the gascolator. Another
small savings and it eliminates 2 more leak points in your fuel system.
That is what I mean about this unit being one of the most thoughtfully
designed parts you can buy for an airplane. Very cool.
