Hi Jesse,

You mention making holes in the front carrythrough. Just want to make you
aware that in my builder's manual it specifically states " Do not drill any
holes in the front FUS-5". In my manual this is section 12.9 paragraph 16.
My understanding from this (and conversation w/MAM Tech) is that you
shouldn't make any holes in the front wall of the forward FUS-5 tube. I
don't know why.
Just FYI.

Isn't FUS-5 the 2" square tube? My manual says you can cut that in half
lengthwise and discard the front wall if using the bungee gear! ;)
I remember cautions not to put holes through the 1x2 vertical cage sides
though.

Hardly anybody now cuts the tubes in half. If you have the spring
gear, you can't anyway, as you need the full width for attachment !
(of course, hardly anybody up here gets the spring gear ;-) )

There may not be much reduction in strength, but why reduce any ??!!
The weight saving WAS significant IF you were going ultralight,
with a small engine ...

I think I will use nutplates now that Drew confirms the idea works well. I
am now considering cutting just the front face off the front carrythrough.
This would still give me the platform for control column mounting, but

allow easy access to the wishbone bolts, and ease the corner cage bolts
install. The rear carrythrough would still be full dimension.
I also have some special reasons for wanting to do this that have to do

my rudder/elevator cables non-standard routing under the floor. It would
also create a nice pocket to hide wires or fuel/hydraulic lines that may

up running across the cabin.

Yes it is. My manual says the same (cutting in half lengthwise), but when

talked with MAM Tech (at the time, Brian) cutting it in half was not
recommended (as was the drilling of holes). Don't ask me why it was still
in the manual. Anyway, I just wanted to bring it to Jesse's attention

he asked.

Before you simply cut them in half......give some thought to where the
control column bearing holders sit.... since they require the full width of
the original tubes. Then use a good bandsaw and while cutting the tubes in
half swing in and out where the holders need to go to leave a pad to
rivet/bolt them to. Otherwise you will have to reinforce the floor behind
the rear tube for the safe retention of the rear flange of the bearing
holders ....as the rear flange will no longer be on the rear 2" tube if you
move the holders back to sit on the cut down forward tube.

Of course you have to drill holes in both tubes to install the bolts. All
I'm saying is, after discussions with MAM (Brian), at that time they were
not approving the drilling of holes in the FRONT FACE OF THE FORWARD FUS-5.
Drill through the rear FUS-5, enlarge the holes in the rear wall of the
rear FUS-5 for a socket, and drill through the rear wall only of the
forward FUS-5, bolt together.

That's what I was told. That's what the manual inferred. That's the way I
did it. It didn't make a lot of sense to me at the time (still doesn't)
because I will have to take the floor panels up and the corner wraps off if
I ever want to access the bolts, but Brian said it wasn't an issue, and
I've never built an airplane before so I followed the instructions.

Again, I only mentioned it because Jesse asked for comments.
