Mike there are different size pullers for different sized rivets in mine
maybe you have small pullers and large rivets.. Dale SR-033

THere is stuff in the archives on this that is likely better than my
memory but:

1. do you occasionally put a few drops of oil in the air inlet? If not
eventually it will bind and not fully retract. That is the most likely
problem.

2. the stroke is adjustable if you remove the nosepiece but put lots of
oil in it first to see if it loosens up.

3. Very occasionally they need more oil in the hydraulic cylinder but I
believe when that happens it will still retract but will not pull the
rivet fully IIRC. The air piston pushes on a hydraulic piston which
pulls the mandrel.

Mike,
I have gone through this problem. Very frustrating when you're in the middle
of a wing skin or something.
When you release the trigger the jaws come forward and contact the inside of
the nose piece. This contact forces the jaws open slightly, releasing the
mandrel. I found that after a lot of use, that area of the nosepiece had
been worn down enough that it wasn't contacting the jaws enough anymore. I
tried numerous adjustments, but I could not get it to break the mandrel off
and also release it, only one or the other. I was using a specially modified
nosepiece that fit the mandrel perfectly and didn't leave a burr on the
rivet head. I had to give up on that nosepiece and go back to the one that
is supposedly for 1/8 rivets. Everything works, but I get small burrs now.
If you have already tried adjusting the puller head, the solution is to get
a new nosepiece.

I solved the problem of burrs by making a small die from some 0.063
steel. It has a 1/4-inch spherical radius that fits over the rivet
head. At the center of the spherical radius is a 5/64-inch hole that
goes through the steel. To use it, I slip the die over the mandrel
before I put the rivet puller on the rivet. I can use a nosepiece with
a hole that allows the mandrel to fall out when the trigger is
released. If you are interested, I can send you a drawing of the die

That's OK Roger,
Thanks anyway, but I'm kind of over it. I don't have a lathe, and I had a
machinist moddify the first nosepiece which cost me 20 bucks. I will just
accept the burr. Where they are bothersome I just take a small file lightly
over and that takes care of it. I can do a whole row in seconds.
